Zedoljev
The People's Tschazanovite Territories of the Greater Zedoljan Soviet (Zlevic: Naródnĭĕ Şĉazanóvistskiĕ Tĕrrítorii Ból'ŝĕgo Zêdólĕiskogo Sóvĕta) or Greater Zedoljan Soviet (Zlevic: Ból'ŝii Zêdólĕiskii Sóvĕt) is the term given to the area in the heart of the region that is administered by the Greater Zedoljan Soviet – the leading Primary Territorial Soviet of the Union of Soviet Tschazanovite Republics. It is very often simply referred to as “Zedoljev” or “Greater Zedoljev”, after its primary nation – a nation which inherited the control of all the territories - but in fact the territories are officially made up of four separate Republics. Another significance is that “Zedoljev” comes from the Ancient Urallian “Zedoliev” (Зэдолиев) the name that was given to the entire island group by the Ancient Urallian colonists. Ironic that after centuries of existing on the southern tips of the island group, the descendants of the Urallian settlers now controls almost all of what was claimed at the height of the Empire.

History

Pre-Formation History
The idea of a more formal alliance between The People’s Republic of Zedoljev and her protectorates (San Fredlando and The Borderlands of Burning Flame) arose after the collapse in international relations Zedoljev suffered following the Gnome Islands War. Zedoljev took it upon itself to seek a more isolationist and neutral approach to regional relations, withdrawing from all major alliances and pacts she was currently a member of (This included COMECON and significantly MuDeAl) thus removing Zedoljev from part of a potentially disastrous stand-off within MuDeAl between the left-wing side (Zedoljev herself and Nurdbotia) and the more capitalistic nations (in particular Teral and New Cyberia). The hope, as suggested by then Zedoljan Chief Foreign Minister Gragonev, was that by effectively standing down, enough momentum for confrontation between the two opposing sides would be lost. The plan seemingly worked, but at the cost of Zedoljev’s substantial regional standing.
Following on from that decision Gragonev again suggested that, in case relationships with the rest of the region again turned sour, Zedoljev and her closest allies should be bound together for protection. Thus a Unity was suggested that allowed more extensive economic and military cooperation between Zedoljev, her Colonies, San Fredlando and Burning Flame. This was soon amended with the reorganisation of existing Zedoljan territories both in the centre of the Region and in the Colonial Territories. Areas that were now part of the extended Zedoljev but had once recently belonged to other, now defunct nations became quasi-autonomous Republics, honouring the native people that lived there with their own Secondary Territorial Soviets. In the Colonial Territories, each separate Colony became its own Republic, with Tertiary Territorial Soviets. With that, the Unity was reformed as the Union of Soviet Tschazanovite Republics. The Greater Zedoljan Soviet was established to run the Secondary Territorial Soviets in the centre of the region, and became one of four Primary Territorial Soviets, along with the New (or Colonial) Zedoljan Soviet (otherwise known as “Novyi Zedoljev”), The Flamish People’s Council, and the Soviet of San Fredlando and Her Colonies. The Primary Territorial Soviets were all to answer to a much more significant Executive Soviet of the Union but that Soviet has rarely met.
Effectively the Greater Zedoljan Soviet equates to the Politburo of the former People’s Republic of Zedoljev, but with increased areas of jurisdiction. The major difference is that members can be elected to the Politburo from all the Secondary Territorial Soviets (Dumas) under the sphere of its control. This was just one factor in a large scheme to enthuse native peoples from acquired territories. The Greater Zedoljan Soviet remains predominately of Zlevic makeup.
Post-Formation History
Since its formation, the Greater Zedoljan Soviet has quickly become the most significant Soviet of any level within the Union. As it is for all tense and purposes the Politburo of Zedoljev, the most significant Republic, it makes all the most important decisions that affect the day to day running of the Union. The other three Primary Territorial Soviets are completely autonomous and usually get on by themselves. The Executive Soviet of the Union has been completely downgraded from it’s original idea of one all powerful Soviet governing everything in the Union – instead, it is purely the term given to when the four Primary Territorial Soviets gather to discuss important matters. The most recent and obvious example was during the Dominion Wars, where in particular the Greater Zedoljan Soviet, the Flamish People’s Council and the Colonial Zedoljan Soviet met to discuss the use of troops and ships against Dominion interests (in defence of Soviet interests and the wellbeing of left-leaning “sisters” – for example Yugopatomia)
The Territories have also changed little. The Greater Zedoljan Soviet has however poured many resources into the reconstruction of areas of Vellsandia or Villiya that were destroyed or abandoned during the Wells-Villian Civil War - the most significant case of this is the former Vellsandian city of Ajagusta, once stronghold of the Kakolaos partisans that was almost utterly obliterated and left desolate for many years. Today it is now larger and in a better condition than before the war broke out.
The biggest change to the lands has been the increase in bureaucracy. Many extra-nationals (current citizens who were born in the former states now absorbed by Zedoljev) have remarked with some irritation about the “over-complicated” level of hierarchy within Greater Zedoljev. The official response has always been that it is the only way possible to guarantee the same equal rights and opportunities throughout Greater Zedoljev. Some remain unconvinced.
Greater Zedoljev has in some ways also been plagued by Zendivostok’s bitter feud with New Cyberia, a feud that has lasted ever since the debacle following on from the Gnome Islands War, with many seeing the Greater Cyberian Union (GCU) and the Union of Soviet Tschazanovite Republics as direct foils for each other. Various nasty allegations have been flung by both sides – the most significant being the horrific destruction of the PEELympic Dream, a large CAs-801 carrying Cyberian athletes back from the 1st PEELympics that was held in Teral. The plane exploded in the presence of four NVSZ MiG-99s whilst over the Villiyan-GCU border. Both sides accused the other of wrong-doing, but the exact cause of the destruction of the craft still hasn’t been discovered. It is worth noting that the Villiyan area of Wells-Ville was cut in two by Zedoljev and New Cyberia (at that point on very good terms with each other) so there is a huge concern throughout the Villiyan community that should New Cyberia and Zedoljev come to blows – their lands will be hit first and foremost.
Politics

Each of the four Republics have their own State Dumas – the Secondary Territorial Soviets – but effectively all of Greater Zedoljev is dominated by Zendivostok – in other words the Politburo-cum-Greater Zedoljan Soviet.
It is described as a “Council-Based Socialist Democracy” – there are no parties. It is defined as a system where individuals devote themselves to carry the will of their constituents to the powers that be and discuss without vested interest (beyond the interests of the constituents) what needs to be done and what is the best course of action.
Greater Zedoljev is run by a Premier who is also Head of State of The Zedoljan Soviet Federated Tschazanovite Republic and is also President of the Union. The Premier is technically elected for life, but can be replaced if there is a successful vote of no confidence, and also can chose to retire. The Politburo has a recycling policy in that every 9 months, 12 members have to be dropped and replaced with 12 fresh Representatives from any of the four Dumas across Greater Zedoljev. This completely random rotation does not however apply to Chief Ministers, or Permanent Members (Premier, Deputy Premier, State Governors and Service Representatives) and it may be decided by the Dumas that the person already performing a role marked for rotation is performing so well that rotation is not necessary - in which case another position is randomly designated. That decision can only be taken by the Dumas however.
Greater Zedoljev also has another element to Politics and that is the Nastavnik – a completely independent organisation that acts as watchdogs for all levels of society and Government. Technically they are the most powerful individuals in the entire country, as they are sanctioned the right to act in the interest of the people when the responsibilities of any member of Government, including the Premier, are not being met.

Geography
] Greater Zedoljev is a relatively small state, but is notable for its location – almost right at the heart of the region. It also completely dominates the Morbo Strait perhaps the most important water way in the region. Despite its small size, there is a diversity of landscapes and climates. In the south of the mainland, there are many forests and agricultural areas, although Zedoljev is not renowned as a leading agricultural producer, with much of the land not nearly as fertile as many other parts of the region. The cause of this is believed to be that before severe climate change hit the planet, the areas around the Morbo Bridge were mostly hot and dry. Following the climate change, that brought the cooling waters of the Great East-West Current, much of the area has become wet and temperate, but there has been too little time for fertility to increase to great levels. Evidence of the ancient hotness of the area can still be seen in the native people of Mayatia and Vellsandia, whose much darker skin is a great contrast to the pale skin of the Tuets and Zlavs who arrived in the lands after the climatic change. Areas in the west of Vellsandia remain hot and dry, in particular around the region of Teresapolis, where they are less affected by the currents. The Mayatian islands and several of the islands in the Soljulev Region remain rocky and dusty, although they are usually covered by snow in the winter months.
In the north, the land is wetter still, in particular around the great Speliopoulos Bay, where much of the shoreline is marshland. The south of the country is more populated, partially because much of the north was abandoned during the Wells-Villian Civil War, so a large portion of the north has been given back to nature, and much of the north is covered in forests. Zedoljev prides itself on its environmental commitments, and much of the countryside is preserved, even at the expense of crowding in the major cities – but Zedoljev strives to combat urban pollution just as much as rural pollution.
Hills litter the landscape, but the only real mountain range of note is the Gorbanov Mountains that form the “spine” of the mainland. It’s thought that a much greater mountain range existed thousands of years ago, but the Great Climatic Change flooded much of the land and formed many of the islands the currently litter the Zedoljan coastline.
The most significant of the many islands around Zedoljev is Vostok Island – the largest and technically the birthplace of the modern state. Other important islands include the Isle of Yuree, Soljulev Pegus Island and of course the two major Mayatian islands Siminshlamalif and Ramigaf

Many rivers exist in Greater Zedoljev; however none are of any great length. Perhaps the most important rivers in Greater Zedoljev are the River Anya, River Drazna, Soran River, Niche River and the Mikoyan River There are very few sizable lakes in the Territories either – except of course Lake Thetresos, which is one of the larger lakes in southern PEEL.

Borders
Perhaps the easiest way to describe the borders of Greater Zedoljev is to work North-South then West-East
- Two separate land borders with the GCU state of North Wells-Ville (through Villiya)
- Extensive shoreline into the Cyberian Channel, Cyclopean Sea and Elzar Strait, facing the shorelines of Spifflandia, East Talman, North Wells-Ville and New Cyberia
- Extensive shoreline into the Sea of Seymour facing the shorelines of Djorvak, Nixorbania and Tweeklandia
- Land borders with Spifflandia, Djorvak (through Vellsandia)
- Extensive shoreline into Morbo Strait, facing the shorelines of Djorvak and Tweeklandia
- Land borders with Tweeklandia and Nurdbotia (through Mayatia)
- Extensive shoreline into Morbo Strait and Cyclopean Sea, facing the shoreline of Nurdbotia
Due to its location, all but a very few of Zedoljev’s waterways open out to provide easy access to a huge amount of the region and beyond, aiding Zedoljev in becoming a dominant naval power.

Economy
An economy based highly on self-dependence, even before the U.S.Ts.R became isolationist, the Zedoljan economy has become one of the strongest in the entire region. For much of its history however this is not the case, with economic supremacy only being reached within the last twenty years or so. With recycling high in the priorities, very little is left to be wasted and this mentality is evident right the way through Zedoljan society. Areas in industry that Greater Zedoljev does not excel at are luckily partially filled by other members of the Union. For example, much of the Information Technology of the Union comes from Burning Flame, and much agriculture comes from the Colonies to make up for the unsuitable land in Greater Zedoljev.
The Zedoljan currency (Denari [DEN]) has existed for hundreds of years, but today is a bit of a false statement as citizens of Greater Zedoljev are only paid “through welfare” and so there is no need for an everyday currency. It now only exists on an international level when Zedoljev is trading with other nations. Due to slightly different rules in San Fredlando, the Denari shared with Zedoljev before the Socialist Revolution in Zedoljev remains in circulation, however it is called the San Fredlandian Denari and bares little resemblance to the former Zedoljan Denari.
Greater Zedoljev’s great producers are usually found inside the boundaries of Federal Zedoljev (or Rodina) - for example Goransk, Ziblisi and Toragrad although attempts are being made to utilise the industrial centres in acquired lands, Arkenpolis in Vellsandia being one example.
Foreign investment is nearly non-existent – Zedoljev has long since banned this even if such companies were interested in investing in such a left-wing market. Various companies that operated previously in acquired areas are still allowed to operate with some level of independence as long as they meet very strict labour laws. This is part of a gradual phase-in of Socialist ideals into former Capitalist lands – eventually most of even these companies will become completely Government owned.
Zedoljev does acquire much revenue through international trade however, with perhaps military exports being among the most significant earner. Money Zedoljev makes through exports it uses to further subsidize her industry. There is a fear however that arms exports have gotten out of hand, and previously strict laws on the use and re-sale of Zedoljan weapons are being ignored, to the extent that private groups are producing their own versions of Zedoljan designs – in particular firearms like the famous Kalashnikovs. Should trade of such items leave the sphere of direct Zedoljan control, then Zedoljev could suffer heavy loss of earnings which will result in unclear amounts of damage to the economy.

Demographics
Greater Zedoljev has a high population density due to its relatively small size and relatively huge population. It is concentrated mostly in the south, along the southern and western shores of Speliopoulos Bay and along the shoreline of the Elzar Strait.
Due to unique events in the state’s history, the ethnic diversity of Greater Zedoljev is fairly small, with roughly 98% of the inhabitants of the original boundaries of Zedoljev being ethnic Zlav (although that included about 13% who claimed to be Sanyish who are of San Fredlando – although they have the same ethnic background they claim to be of a different culture ergo not the same as Zedoljan Zlavs) Likewise, in Villiya, roughly 89% still claim to be Tuets – it is only in Vellsandia and Mayatia that there was any major diversity. As it stands, across Greater Zedoljev, roughly 81% of all people are Zlavs or Sanyish. 9% are Tuets, 5% Vellik, 2% Mayan and 3% other. This includes Neptunians, Margei, Hulan, Plutoains, Tweekians, Cyberians, Slimmoans and Djorvakians
Of that, only Vellik and Margei were found in the People’s Republic of Zedoljev before the collapse of Wells-Ville and Mayatland. Many people fled Wells-Ville during the war, and several more fled from the prospect of a Socialist government, which is why that there is a disproportionate percentage of Zlavs in the whole country.
Zlevic remains the official state language, however Zedoljev has its own unique Script that distinguishes it from other Zlevic speaking nations, although PEEL Standardised Language is also taught in all schools across Greater Zedoljev and spoken in some areas, but Sanyish, Tuetsche, Vellos, Hulan, and Arakesh languages are also officially allowed to be taught and spoken by native speakers across various areas – usually in the acquired territories.
The Reformed Church of the Goddess remains the main religion in Zedoljev, and is officially the State Religion of Federal Zedoljev. However, even within Federal Zedoljev, people are allowed to follow their own religions. The most common religions apart from the RCotG in Greater Zedoljev are: Jueishami, Archangelism, Messiahanism as well as Orthodox Chisstantism, Arakesh as well as some amount of Atheism.
