John Charles Palmer is a Confederal sailor who worked his way up from serving on the below-decks crews of merchant ships to become a leading figure in the trade union movement and in the Labour Party. After years spent in various leadership posts in the now defunct Danaan Union of Seamen, he became the first President of the Confederal Maritime Union in early 2007. He is expected to represent the Labour Party in the first Confederal Council, heading the Department of Industrial Affairs. There is also a distinct possibility that he might be elected the first Confederal Vice-President.
