Grand Duke, or Storhertug, became the title of the Head of State and Head of Government in Hamptonshire on 5 August 1004. The official title was "Storhertug af desto Storhertugdømme af Hamptonamt" until 1870 when Grand Duke Christian VII enacted the Official Languages Act which elevated English alongside Danish as the national language. As a consequnce, since 1870 the English translation of the title is more commonly used.

There is a two year interregnum period between each Grand Duke during which a Regent rules the nation.
