The National Syndicalist Party is the sole legal political party in The Phalange, and has been since January 2, 1975. The party was founded by the late Marcelo da Palma Salazar (b. February 11, 1911, d. September 12, 1993), a highly respected statesman who served as the first Prime Minister of The Phalange, and served in that capacity until he was incapacitated by a debilitating stroke in 1991. Its constitution was drafted by Dr. António Caetano (the current Prime Minister), with help from Salazar, Generalissimo Léopoldo Bahamonde, and about a dozen lawyers, businessmen, and military leaders. Though originally pure fascist, the party's politics have undergone a metamorphosis over the years, and has replaced its official ideology of national syndicalism with Absolute Capitalism (although the party retained its name).
