Introduction

The Reformed Democratic State of Naasha, as it is formally known, is situated in the southeast of the continent of Nova Europa. The area known as Greater Naasha includes mainland Naasha, islands in both the Aegean and Ionian seas and the semi-autonomous states of Surdun, Nova Crete and the Nova Aegean Islands.

History and present situation

Founded as the 'Glorious Naashan Empire' in 1547, the fledgling nation occupied similar borders to Naasha as it is known today. Taking advantage of the disorganisation amongst her neighbours, the Naashan Empire was able to expand her rule south into the lower section of the Naashan peninsula as well as east and west, seizing many of the small islands in the Ionian and Aegean seas. A series of gruelling wars ensued against the island nations of Nova Crete, Tretton and the confederation that would later become the Nova Aegean Islands. Though the Empire was unable to secure any lasting foothold on her adversaries, a great number of troops were lost in the attempt.

The loss of troops, particularly those loyal to the reigning Emperor Delfin IV in 1785 is believed to be crucial in undermining confidence in the regime and sowing the seeds of the revolt that occured in the next year. The Spring Revolt, as it has come to be known, saw peasant uprisings across southern Naasha. The Emperor ordered what troops were available to quell the resistors but local garrisons resisted, choosing to abandon their posts and assist the war weary and disgruntled lower classes. Although an attempted uprising in the nothern capital of Sandya was brutally quashed, the ensuing riots were enough to tie up what loyal troops remained in the north of the country. Taking advantage of the lack of reprisal, the former peasants established the breakaway kingdom of Surdun, occupying all of the land south of the Imperial City of Morgur.

Once order had been restored in Naasha, Delfin IV began on a series of brutal acts of vengeance on the lower classes. He appointed a fanatical priest as his advisor, known as the 'Green One' and was presumably converted to his following shortly after. He took the title of Jade Emperor and began plotting the invasion of Surdun. This amounted to nothing more than border skirmishes until the year of 1791, when a vast invasion force was assembled to retake the lands to the south. It is known that the Emperor had intended to land the bulk of his forces on the eastern coast of Surdun in order to seize the port city of Jaevre while his own household cavalry broke through the narrow and well defended border region to the north.

Unfortunately for Delfin, Surdunni spies had infiltrated his court and thus his invasion plans became known to his enemies at least three months before their execution. This gave the 'King' of Surdun, a charismatic merchant named Yuri Fenter, ample time to rally his own forces for a spectacular ambush in the borderlands. He also formed alliances with the Nova Cretans and the confederacy of Nova Aegean Islands whose fleets joined those of his own to engage the Imperial landing force. The allied fleets easily defeated the Imperial landing force, drowning a large portion of Delfin's army and forcing the rest to return to port. Meanwhile on land, Yuri Fenter's ambush went as planned, obliterating the vanguard of the enemy force and wounding Delfin himself. The swift withdrawal of the Imperial forces led to the war being referred to as the 'Five Hour War', although in reality it is likely that Imperial and Surdunni troops continued to clash for days after the incident.

The Jade dynasty continued right into the 21st century, the last reigning descendant being Alicia II who was overthrown in November 2006. The fall of the Empire was brought about late that year when a terrorist organisation calling itself the 'United Nations of Naasha and Surdun' and headed by Gregor Radinar and Thomas Lenrov, began to conduct attacks on Naashan infrastructure. This drew an invasion of Surdun, who the Empress believed was sponsoring the UNNS, although in reality the UNNS were conducting frequent attacks on the corrupt Surdunni government as well. The resulting occupation drew international attention and swift intervention from both Cravan and Clandonia Prime forced the withdrawal of Imperial troops from Surdun. Dissatisfied with the Imperial regime in Naasha, Clandonia Prime conducted an invasion of the country later in the month.

The deployment of Clandonian marines and paratroops quickly forced the surrender of much of the Imperial Army, although fierce fighting slowed the Clandonian capture of Vogrost and Sandya. Seeing the atrocities commited by both sides in the war, including the use of chemical weapons and the destruction of swathes of buildings by artillery and satellite weapons, the UNNS decided that Clandonia was no less of an Imperialistic threat than the previous regime and resisted until the withdrawal of Clandonian forces in December. The subsequent 'liberation' of Naasha and Surdun by UNNS forces working in coalition with Dentara, Ezaltia and Ackistan was acheived over Christmas and into 2007.

Since the UNNS officialy disbanded in 2008, the country has been run by a democratic government headed by Prime Minister Darren Renner of the Naashan Democratic Party. Darren Renner's progressive policies in defense and the economy have revitalised the country, turning it into a true first world nation and gaining membership in the Nova Europan Alliance. He also succeeded in uniting the country with Nova Crete, Tretton and the Nova Aegean Islands, all of which have a limited semi-autonomy similar to that enjoyed by Surdun.

Naasha has been involved in two conflicts during his term, the first was a war with Clandonia Prime over the deployment of Clandonian naval assets in the Nova Mediterranean to threaten Naasha's Nova Europan ally, Kroando. Fortunately, no Naashan sailors were killed during the brief action and the conflcit soon petered out after a failed Clandonian offensive.

Naasha was also involved in the Trivalvian 'Green Revolution' in which Naashan troops aided William MacKenzie in his liberation of the country from the grip of President Tony Harrington who had used the military to secure his dictatorship of the country rather than step down to a vote of no confidence. Naashan casualties were remarkably light during the conflict, which helped to raise public approval of the government and particularly the navy, who played a crucial role in the destruction of the Nationalist fleet during the conflict.

Work in progress.
