The Ariddian reunification flag began as an unofficial but rather popular flag intended to be used in the PDSRA, West Ariddia and North-West Ariddia. It was decided on during meetings between representatives of the three governments. Some citizens took to displaying it wherever they could, as a symbol of their support for reunification, or perhaps simply for a re-affirmed common Ariddian identity.

In 2142, as Ariddia and NWA moved towards re-unification, the flag was officially adopted as that of the Federation of the Ariddian Isles.

Usage

The flag is not officially called a "reunification flag", but rather a "national flag", referring to the idea that all three Ariddian States constitute a single nation. It is also commonly referred to as the "flag of the Ariddian Isles".

Its first use in an official event was for the Ariddian Isles' joint delegation to the Second Winter Olympiad.

It is now flown officially in Ariddia and North-West Ariddia, the latter's respective flags ([1], [2]) being "downgraded" to the status of "State flags".

In West Ariddia, it is flown by private supporters of re-unification.

Symbolism

The flag was, according to its designers from the three countries, intended to be "simple and neutral". Thus it adopts a design not used by any of the three countries' flags, and eshews colours such as red and black (the colours of Ariddia), light blue and grey (those of West Ariddia) as well as green (which symbolises environmental commitments, an area of contention between Ariddia and West Ariddia). Instead, deep blue represents unity and the fact the nation is composed of islands, while yellow is the colour of hope and strength.
