These conditions largely determined history and culture of the nation. Forests and swamps were always the perfect refuge for the exiles from kingdoms tormented by turmoils of war.

While the levy in mass performed excellently defending the land from the invasion, underpopulated country wouldn't be able to resist in the long run the might of adjoining Empire of Estaron. That is why Lord Hodbor decided to pledge the oath of fealty to Othomahr and became the first Duke of Sleng. But, thanks to his fierce resistance before, he was able to negotiate the terms that made the fealty mostly fictious. This is how Sleng, while preserving its independence, won peace on its border and opened to Estaronian merchants. Soon, the first roads passable all the year were built, and Hodbor's court began to fill with Estaronians taking refuge from the tyranny of their emperor.
