History

The founding of Belgium

The earliest memories of the region go back to february 4 2003, when the Flemish magazine HUMO published a small article about Nationstates. February 4 2003 is therefore considered as the founding date of the region. In these early days, some nations arrived and they chose a delegate, Paq, who stayed on the delegate seat for half a year.

The 'pre-history' of Belgium

We can describe the first half year of the region as 'Pre-history', since there are no documents stored from that period. Simply because Belgium had no forum. It were a region between 40 and 50 nations, with only informal contacts. Paq was the undiscussed delegate during this period. The Belgian nations were busy with some general chat on the civil headquarters with sometimes a little bit RP. Contacts between other regions were almost unexistent. Some important events happened during this period:

Vlaanderen: the first split

One moment in the very early history of the region, some nations created the region Vlaanderen. This resulted in a non-violent split. both regions lived peacefully next to eachother and there were some good contacts between members of the regions.

Onafhankelijk Vlaanderen: The second split

Short after founders were introduced in the NS-world, a nation called TVOT created the region Onafhankelijk Vlaanderen (Independent Flanders in english). TVOT started aggressive recruitement campaigns in Belgium and Vlaanderen. That caused the troubled relations between Belgium and Vlaanderen versus Onafhankelijk Vlaanderen. Later, when the Dutch NS-regions came more and more in contact with eachother, Onafhankelijk Vlaanderen became a very isolated region. Eventually it died in mid 2004.

Times of troubles

Maybe the most crucial period in the developement of Belgium. End august 2003, the old delegate, Paq, went on vacation. And then the troubles began. Around mid august some new nations arrived, known as the Zulubulu-clan. August 19 2003, the Zulubulu-clan launched an attack on Belgium's good neighbour Vlaanderen. The Flemisch delegate, Feisty, noticed the attack and ejected them. The same day revealed that the Zulubulu-clan were only three players with some multies. The attackers lost their multies and heavily damaged they regrouped in Belgisch Limburg, with the goal to invade Vlaanderen and Belgium. They managed to infiltrate Belgium and gathered enough endorsements to conquer Belgium with a small attack from outside. Luckily for the region, the Zulubulu-clan didn't attack, but Belgium has never been this close to a takeover. In this same period, the Belgians heard from different sources that The Holy Alliance, a very active invadergroup in these days, planned an attack on Belgium. These troubles in a period when the delegate was inactive with only 16 endorsements made the Belgians think of organising their region.

The organisation of the region

In reaction to the troubles the most active nations in Belgium decided to organise the region. August 22 the inactive delegate was replaced by West-Flanders to make Belgium able to react on invasions. The change was made with the promise of elections in the near future. The same day Feisty, delegate of Vlaanderen, made a forum for his region and invited the Belgians to join that forum. From that day most happenings in Belgium are stored, although the pre-history for Belgium ended earlier, at august 12 2003, with the start of the first Dutch newspaper, The International Koekeloerders Tribune. Slowly the most active nations of the region joined the forum and found there a very good medium to talk about the troubles and the organisation of the region. When Paq Returned, at september 1 2003, elections were announced as promised. The candidates for these first delegate-elections were: Paq, Hamme, Belsele, Riemstagrad, Gare Apen, Carolineke, Pou-Belle and Lucifers Hideout. At september 7 Hamme became the first democratically elected delegate of Belgium. These elections were followed by elections for the governement, mid september 2003. The winners were: Carolineke, West-Flanders and Riemstagrad.

September 8 was the start of the talks for a constitution. After long and difficult talks the proposed constitution was adopted by the nations of Belgium at october 19 2003.
