Captain Horatio is the pen name of Costa Bravan Denis St. James, who was born in Durban to a homeless woman, Elizabeth Garroche. Suffering from Downs Syndrome, Horatio lived with his mother in streets and abandoned warehouses throughout Isla de Muerte for much of his youth, until her death in 1940. Horatio was then sent to an orphanage in Costiglione, where he remained for ten years, unclaimed. He spent much of his time there writing a compilation of his fantastical misadventures on the streets of Durban. He saved the story, which was later published as Vomit and Bile: Childhood Bedside Stories for the Faint.

Horatio is perhaps best known for the novel Oosesl?, published in 1975.
