The '''Ceorana Department of State Human Development Index''', or '''CHDI''' is a formula developed by the [[Ceorana]] Department of State to rank nations by their "human development". The formula is still in a beta stage, so Ceorana is the only nation with an "official" number, although the CDOS has said that other nations may use the formula as they wish.

Revision as of 22:11, 28 February 2006

The Ceorana Department of State Human Development Index, or CHDI is a formula developed by the Ceorana Department of State to rank nations by their "human development". The rankings are published approximately monthly. Although a rough formula is available to all, the only "official" rankings are the ones published by the Ceorana Department of State.

The Formula

The CHDI is calculated in three parts, the first two helping to determine the third. Since NationStates forbids nations to tell other nations statistics such as GDP, literacy rate and life expectancy, the CHDI makes educated guesses using numbers that are given. The final CHDI is the three indices averaged.

The first part is the GDP index:

(log(GDP per capita)-log(300))/(log(50000)-log(300))

The second part is the Education index:

The Education index is the literacy rate

The literacy rate is calculated as follows:

If the nation's education spending per student, taken to be 20% of the population, is greater than $1,000, the literacy rate is 99%.
If it is less than $1,000, the literacy rate is taken to be the education spending per student divided by 1000.
If this literacy rate is lower than 90% but higher than 20%, the literacy rate is the weighted average of two times the literacy index and one time the GDP index, to account for private schools.
If the education total gives a literacy rate of lower than 20%, then the literacy rate is taken to be just the GDP index.

The last part is the Life Expectancy index:

(life expectancy - 25) / (85 - 25)

Life expectancy is calculated as:

80 * (average of GDP and Education indices) + Healthcare spending per capita / 100
Life expectancy cannot go above 85 years.
If the life expectancy index is lower than the GDP index, the life expectancy index is the weighted average of two times the life expectancy index and one time the GDP index, to account for private healthcare.
