Crime is a derived attribute the game calculates for each nation.

The game always assigns one of the following ratings (listed here from lightest to heaviest crime):

  • Totally Unknown
  • Well Under Control
  • Relatively Low
  • Moderate
  • A Problem
  • A Serious Problem
  • A Major Problem
  • Pervasive
  • Crippling

The game may also modify this rating with other statements, such as:

  • "especially youth related"
  • "thanks to the all-pervasive police force"
  • "probably because of the country's utter lack of prisons"

The exact game mechanics behind crime have not been well-discussed in the NationStates forums. It appears that increasing police and education funding as well as welfare decreases crime, while certain economic freedoms increase it.
