He won 71% of the vote in the final round over Jonathan Peters, a landslide win attributed to his outspoken commitment to international socialism and a backlash after the August Crisis where right-wing militants kidnapped and killed federal Labour Minister Justin Kermana, as well as a Free Pacific States diplomat. He was sworn in as the 15th President on October 1, 2006, succeeding Joseph Sutter.
