The Engelburg-class destroyer was the first ship to be designed entirely by Wingardian engineers. Its role would be to patrol the waters of the archipelago during peacetime, and provide anti-submarine defense for the fleet in wartime. The vessel was launched in 1992 and entered active service in 1996, completely replacing every non-national destroyer in service by the time the extensive build program was completed in 2000. The imported vessels were promptly decomissioned and re-sold to other countries.
