Filipe Navorro (b. 1803, d. 1889) was the leader of the region of Castosas (now The Republic of Lambon) for 21 years, between 1868 and 1889.

Background

Most of Navorro's background is unknown, but we do know that he was born in 1803 and was believed to have grown up in the Italian city of Cagliari. Most of the information on him starts when he takes over the region however.

Dictatorship

From reports, Navorro had an Italian background and he was thought to have arrived from Cagliari with a fleet of about 5 ships, with about 2,500 men. His reasons for taking over the region of Castosas is unknown but he managed to overthrow the currently failing government with ease. He ran a very harsh government but was very popular throughout the peoples. The fact that he was able to control the region with a small army of only about 3,000 men in 1870 shows that there was a lack of opposition (this number did increase to nearly 40,000 by 1985 however).

Death

Navorro, although very old was a very powerful man. He had managed to take over the region in 1968, at the age of 65. By his last years in power, although still powerful, his old age meant that his influence over the people was weakening.

On 23rd July 1989, Filipe Navorro was found dead in his office within his manor-house, at the age of 86. He had been stabbed 5 times and left to die. There was never anyone found guilty for this murder, but many historians believe it was linked with the Portuguese take-over of the region just a month later (The Portuguese saw this area as a huge colonial opportunity).
