Established in 1938, Garamba National Park is one of the oldest national parks in Africa. It was designated as a World Heritage Site in 1980. The park is home to the world's only remaining wild population of northern white rhinos, who are critically endangered by excessive poaching which, will illegal, reaps tremendous profits due to the scarcity and value of their horns. The park once ran a program that domesticated wild elephants so tourists could ride them, but it is believed this program has been discontinued.
