History

The nation of Gran Ixia has a long and ancient history. Well over a millenia ago, the Mayans sailed across the waters of their mysterious homeland and landed on the shores of Gran Ixia and they named it Chispear las Costas for the islands sparkling shores and beaches. The Mayan civilization was the most advanced but for unknown reasons, their culture and people vanished. In the year 1503, Spanish explorers, missionaries and traders arrived on the beaches where the present-day capital, San Lorenzo is located. The natives who are of Mayan decent, now called the Mestizos, attempted to fight the Spainards from taking away their land, it was hopeless since the Spanish explorer-soldiers were more advanced and better weaponry. Only mere months after landing on the island, the Spanards established their first permanent settlement on the location as to where they landed and named it San Lorenzo after their patron saint.

Hundreds and hundreds of Spanish settlers arrived soon afterwards and over the centuries, small settlements of Italian, British and French people soon sprung up. However, as more and more people arrived, the threat of plague rose and by the early 1600's, a massive plague epidemic broke out and killed well over 100,000 people throughout the island and nearly wiped out several small Mestizo tribes who still lived in the Nozama Rainforest in the interior of the island.

Ixia remained largely isolated and peaceful through the ages until the early 1800's when the idea of self-governance and indepedence started to feed through slowly through revolutionary texts found in the numerious education facilites on the island. The people at this point felt that they no longer considered themselves people of their mother countries but true Ixians, native citizens of the island and a long but rather bloodless revolution took place in 1821 and lasted only a mere two years. At the end of the revolution, the foreign powers were defeated and the Ixians took control of their destiny. The Island of Ixia remained in isolated and eventually became forgotten to all until now.

Ixia after its 183 years of isolation, it has finally flung its doors open to the international community. Chairman Tomás Medina-Valdez is the current leader who has just been 'elected' by the populace to lead their island paradise to their most wanted destinies. Former Chairman, Raúl si Sánchez is responsible for revitalizing and reawaking the national economy from its previous stagnation. Chairman Tomás pledges to continue to rebuild the nation's economy after its long period of isolation as well as a severe policy of moderization to make the island paradise more in line with the current day and age.

Society and Culture

With moderate wealth redistribution by the government, the gap between rich and poor is roughly equal. While the poorest of the poor have to slave in the iron mines in the Celestia Mountains to make a living, richer citizens sit in luxurious offices with views to the beaches along the Golden Coast. Those who can afford it, make a point of spending the whole day with leisure activities, while letting their money work form them. Ixia's hospitals have the best equipment money can buy, but service is not certainly not cheap. Chairman Tomás Medina-Vealdez pledges to make sure within 5 years time that every citizen on the island has affordable healthcare as well as social security. Ixia's social life is quite vibrant and exiciting as there is always something to do in one of Ixia's many cities may it range from festivals and carnivals to parades, races and celebrations. The nightlife is active with many dance clubs which are open into the wee hours of the morning.

The people are quite accepting of other cultures, races, creeds, and ethnicities. Much of the educational focus in Ixia is on the humanities, the arts, and science. Although society is very much foward-looking, Ixians still retain an affection for cultural and national ceremonies. The urban to rural distrubution is quite large as only 42.9% of its population live in the cities, towns, and other urban areas, while the majority of people live in the rural areas of the nation. Ixian cusine is rather strong and has strong influence from Spanish, Italian and French tastes. Ixians are seriously religious and most Spanish, French and Italian decendent peoples are Roman Catholic while the English speaking areas are mainly more Protestant so Gran Ixia is primarly a Christian nation with a little mix of Muslim and Jewish worshipping people.

Economics

While Gran Ixia's economy is still rebuilding itself since its revival under the administration of Chairman Raúl, its still largely an agricultural economy. The primary products grown are bananas, papuyas, tabacco, cocoa, sugarcane and pineapples. Corn is not usually exported since its the stapled food for the Ixians. With the raw products of tabacco and sugarcane, they are further refined into world-famous cigars and rum which are always in high demand.

The Celestia Mountains is rich in raw minerals and has survived the ages without mining much of the mineral wealth which includes vast deposits of iron, bauxite, copper, silver and most revered, gold. However, the nation's gold deposits are almost exhusted because of Spanish occupation and constant mining. To make sure the nation does not ruin the mountain and its wealth, their are vast restrictions made by the government to only allow as much mining as required.

Ixia continues to be a world-class island paradise and every few months, a new luxaury hotel and resort opens its doors to more tourists who come across the Sparkling Sea to visit the ancient ruins of the Mayans and relax along the Golden Beaches. The most famous tourist attraction or event is the Los Santos Carnival during August in which its non-stop partying for over three days stright.
