A brief if intense conflict, the Halladi-Shessaran War or Conflict, as it is more rightly known, is a prime example of just how fragile the bonds are that hold together the government in Eldidd.

The Shessaran Maelgad (Commander-in-Chief) and Prince Braedd Laeryn was sent to Hallad as leader of a force drawn from his own fiefdoms and designed to support Hallad against the incursion of the Hattians and their allies.

When rioting in Erse, the capital of Hallad, reached a certain point, Laeryn declared martial law upon the city, of which he technically had no power over. The local Halladi forces took this as an act of aggression and attacked the Shessaran army. Faced with terrorists and Halladi soldiers of both factions, Laeryn turned his own artillery upon the city. Shessaran troops marched through the streets killing all who opposed them. The toll was great upon the Halladi militants and civilians alike.

Hallad and her allies reacted quickly. Bypassing Erse, which was held and fortified by Laeryn, they marched for the Shessaran border, where a stalemate ensued. The Roman authorities stepped in, and the Praetorium debated the issue at length. Shessaran legal defense pushed to allow them to try Laeryn as a war criminal in their own courts, Halladis wanting to either kill him outright or try him themsleves. In the meantime, Laeryn quietly slipped out of the besieged city and returned to Crastiroedd, in southern Shessara.

Finally, the case was given to Shessaran authorities to try. The Council, comprised of the five great rulers of Shessara, met and debated Laeryn's case. Strangely enough, as one of those rulers, Laeryn tried himself.

According to Shessaran law, a man who feels himself grieved has the right to challenge another to combat. Through intricacies of that law and a little stretching, Laeryn was acquitted of any charge despit objection from the Halladi government.

All that remained was the issue of damages. Shessara paid a fee to Hallad and withdrew the majority of her troops, leaving some behind to aid in Halladi reconstruction.

Approximatly 562 Halladi soldiers were killed by Shessaran forces, along with 1,177 Halladi civilians. Shessaran cassualties in the war were never released by the Shessaran government. The Halladi government has since created a memorial for those who lived through and died in the Erse Massacre.
