This article deals with the Inglehart-Welzel Cultural Map as it relates to NationStates.

The Inglehart-Welzel Cultural Map advances the contention that a great number of society’s more basic values are closely correlated, and can be depicted in just two dimensions of cross-cultural variation.

This chart undertakes to map out an abstract simplification of the great cultures of Earth.

Traditional / Secular-rational values continuum

At its most simplistic level this dimension reflects differences between cultures where religion is significant and cultures were it is not.

Cultures near the traditional side of the spectrum tend to emphasise the importance of the traditional family arrangement, and place importance on parent-child relations. They tend also to have a more patriotic and nationalist outlook.

Cultures near the secular-rational side of the spectrum tend to adopt relatively permissive attitudes towards divorce, abortion, euthanasia and suicide.

Survival / Self-expression values continuum

This dimension was originally conceived as reflecting differences between industrialised and post-industrialised cultures.

Cultures near the survival side of the spectrum value economic and physical security. They tend to be materialist and emphasise hard work, improvement and growth.

Cultures near the self-expression side of the spectrum tend to adopt a complacent attitude towards economic and physical security, and do not strongly emphasise advancement and competitiveness. Instead, they may recognise the value of self-determination and self-transcendence.
