Io is the innermost of the four Galilean moons of Jupiter. It is named after one of the countless lovers of Zeus, known as Jupiter in Roman mythology. Some cultures have other names for Io, deriving from their own mythological systems.

In some of astronomical literature, Io is referred to simply as "Jupiter I" or the "first satellite of Jupiter." However, while once prevalent, these style of referring to Io is no longer in favor.
