He is the only son of wealthy merchant banker and entrepreneur, James Brendan Garrison and his wife, Barbara, a high fashion model. Garrison was born in British Columbia, Canada, while his parents were attending a family funeral - though he was brought up in Victoria, spending most of his childhood in the provincial state of Kingsland. He studied law and business administration at the University of Victoria, graduating in 1976, before becoming a commercial litigator - working briefly in the UK. He later joined one of his father's business ventures, which he assumed control of upon James Garrison's death in the early '80s.

Garrison was first elected to Federal Parliament in 1993, aged 40, as the Member for Gisbon Central (Kingsland). He quickly distinguished himself as an outstanding performer, and popular politician - both in the House and publicly. The Member for Gibson Central held a number of key positions within his party over the next decade, before resigning from parliament in early 2005 to run for Chancellor.

Garrison married a former Miss Georgia and swimsuit model, Sophia Wendy Petrie, on December 22nd 1999, after a long love affair. They have a six-year old daughter, Patricia Sofia. He also has an adult daughter, Jessica, from a previous relationship. One of the wealthiest men to walk the corridors of power in Victoria, John Garrison has an estimated networth of some CV$160 million.
