In Lapalam working is an important (or maybe the most important) duty (and right of course). But the economic system is quite open and really involving, so, for people in Lapalam, working is quite a pleasure (other than a necessary point for claiming more than the basic supplies).
Lapalam's history tends to give a good overview of the present working scenario.
The main production in Lapalam is "natural energy", this product has brougth Lapalam its great fortune along the years and still contributes much to the economical health of the nation.
Before listing all the other businesses that Lapalam hosts, let's go into deep with the great idea the 5 founders had:

An answer to a question

Going back to the origin is always the best way to solve a problem (two commons Von Iags' motto are "Think simple!" and "If something seems difficult, it must be a simple mixture of simple problems"), the world was facing a great lack of energy sources, oil was exausting and money for natural energy was never enough.
Thinking simple, the founders came up to a conclusion: "if men need energy, let's men produce this energy".
Through a sofisticate new dynamo system, the Lapalamian Center for Reeducation (LCR) became the second bigger power station in the world (2000 Megawatts capacity), and the first and best national business.
Having a great influx of men, the production kept stable and money kept entering the National Bank of Lapalam.
The energy production was shared in two different channels: external usage and internal usage; request from other nations always outnumbered the internal request, and no energy waste happened in years (once, for the Big Strike, the internal production wasn't used, but a converter selled this energy outside the country not losing people's credits).
Being there a strickt immigration law, criminals still outnumber legal workers in the energy production business, this tends to keep the energy cost low (just upkeep and hosting costs).

Other businesses

For treatment or simple manual work, houses and streets always need workforce, agriculture and farming are other huge businesses Lapalam encourages (lower taxes and selling advantages).
Cheese production is quite important, free wild/untamed breeding (poultry farms and other animals') produces less than "industrial" standards, but tends to respect animal rights (as founders and citizens proudly ask for).
Software (and recently hardware) production is an uprising business: freeware, GNU and CC softwares seem to be appreciated by people around the world, so donations and private orders are on the rise.
Being there no army and no gun request (Security Guard's supply's sufficient) the aerospace enginering is the massive credit consumer of Lapalam, together with medical research and followed by university and school.
Fishing and hunting are severely restricted (especially if for fun), natural breeding is controlled and assured.

Near and far future

The future looks bright for Lapalam, another level of the power plant is almost finished, scientists are about to prepare a new version of the dynamo and a new version of the L-cab.
Immigration is constant but still strictly controlled, criminals are always enough to assure manpower for the plant and Lapalamian are always raising their living standards.
Long term goals are exportations and space colonization (just for production, not yet for human settlement). If Lapalam should be recognized as a possible reality to live (as founders always hoped), urbanistic and social experts would be of some use for other countries, in order to estimate the impact of "Lapalamization" for a defined country.
