The Lathenruth River (Spanish: río Lácenrud, Catalan: riu Làçenrud and Hyarmendorean: Laëdhän srudh), sometimes called Bólguer River, is a 1’684 km) long river located in northwestern Vassfforcia. It drains the western half of the northern plains with tributaries coming from the Central Mountains. It is an important waterway and its water and that of its tributaries is used for agriculture in the whole region. The cities of Trajania and Vassfforcia la Serenísima are located at its margins. With Défors River it is part of the Lácenrud-Défors Basin, which covers all the north of Vassfforcia and the north easternmost part of Breenonia.

Description

The Lathenruth River rises in central Vilnia, Western Vassfforcia, halfway between Andorcia the boundary with Breenonia. It flows south through the San Luis Valley, then east marking the boundary between Vilnia and Western Vassfforcia. It crosses Trajania and becomes the boundary between Western Vassfforcia and Umperia. Then it flows northeast to Vassfforcia City and makes the boundary between the Province of Vassfforcia and Umperia. A major tributary, Rio Laureles, flows from Dohendor and joins the river some kilometers after the Lathenruth has crossed Trajania. Other known tributaries include the Sant Jordi and the smaller Bólguer Menor. 367 km before its mouth, the Northern Channel (coming from Zulfía) joins the river; this, added to the fact that about 1’200 km of the river are navigable for seafaring ships, makes it one of the most important waterways in the country.

The river has marked the boundary between Umperia (in the north) and the Principality of Vassfforcia since they were created in the 15th century, and the creation and new states (Western Vassfforcia and Vilnia) did not changed this.

The main bridges over the river are located at Trajania as part of its urban highways, between the Province of Vassfforcia and Umperia as part of the Zulfía-Istania highway, along the railroad Zulfía-Trajania and in Vassfforcia City; but there are many other less famous bridges.

It’s use is regulated by the Junta del Lácenrud (Lathenruth Council), an interstate council with members from Umperia, Vilnia, Western Vassfforcia, the Province of Vassfforcia and Vassfforcia City, which determines quotas for the use of water by every state, imposes fines on those who overexploit or pollute the river and fixes tariffs for ships that travel through it.

The Latheruth rises in a fountain in the Vilnian plains and flows on an average elevation of 193 meters over sea level. The climate of the area makes extensive irrigated agriculture unnecessary, thus most of the water may flow to Vassfforcia City without much trouble. Some of its waters, however, are used to supply the cities. The river ends in an estuary in Vassfforcia City where it joins Défors River only six km before reaching the South Pax Sea.

Origin of the Name

Lathenruth comes from Lácenrud, the hispanization of the Hyarmendorean name for the river, Laëdhän srudh, which literally means “Wide River”. As the Catalonian and Spaniards conquerors didn’t spoke Galtadic, when they heard the name they called it Río Lácenrud, thus on Spanish (and every language that uses a name derived from it) the river is literally called “wide river river” .
