The Liberal Party leadership election of 1998 took place after the resignation of Liberal leader and Prime Minister Richard Freudhalten, and thus the election would ultimately decide the new Prime Minister. There were four candidates who received the required number of nominations: then-Health Secretary Maria Carlisle, backbencher Henry Lewis, then-Foreign Secretary Daniel Syzcki and then-Deputy Prime Minister Felix Walsh. It was eventually won by Daniel Syzcki, and was conducted under the Single Transferable Vote system.
