Askira’s museums are outstanding and second to none; it has more than 3,000 libraries. The National Library Act of 1899 established the National Library of Askira by combining several library systems, and is located in Theed. Major towns and cities have their own civic and municipal libraries, and the capitals of the provinces all have provincial libraries and archives. The Atouna Public Library contains about 1.2 million volumes, including some ancient Askiran works. Other leading libraries include the Otago University Library in Babar, the Papilewan Public Library, and the Aiea Public Library. All government records of permanent value are preserved in the National Archives in Theed.Art galleries and museums are found in most large cities, but the oldest institutions are in Theed. The Theed City Art Gallery and the Theed Museum contain notable collections. Atouna City Art Gallery and the Askira Portrait Gallery are situated in Atouna. Outstanding natural history and ethnological collections are found in the National Museum in Atouna, and Otago Museum in Babar. The newMillennium Museum of Askira, the largest museum in the country, opened in Theed in 2000.
