Introduction

Matthos Nevarn is the heir to a rich technocratic dynasty. He inherited the estate when his father, the previous Lord Minister, was assassinated by as yet unidentified attackers. The current Lord Nevarn is the youngest Head of House Nevarn in several centuries.

As head of the most powerful oligarchic Grand House in Nevareion he is also the current Lord Minister, chair of the Grand Council that forms the Nevareies Government. As this is an elected position he has had to struggle continuously to retain it. In order to outflank his rivals from the other Houses, Nevarn has increasingly looked to the Democratic Opposition as a support base. This has lead to him instituting a number of modernising reforms in the economy and political rights.

As a result his popularity amongst the citizens is at an all time high and he is, publicly at least, above criticism by the other House leaders.

Politics

Brought up in one of the wealthiest families in the nation Matthos was trained from an early age for government. This training reflected the House philosophy, developed over the last few centuries, which emphasises creating consensus and controlled steady development that generally favours the rich whilst providing for the general population. The success of this patrician policy has enabled the House to maintain its political dominance until now. However in order to avoid handing control to one of the rival oligarchic Houses Matthos has had to turn to the Democratic Opposition. They have won a series of concessions from the Lord Minister which have extended voting rights and legalised union activity. At the same time he has allowed a general loosening of the economy. This has earn him the bitter enmity of the more conservative Houses but has created an dramatic increase in the wealth of the nation. However as long as his enemies can point to the underlying unemployment and the displacement caused by these changes he remains vulnerable. As a result he may be pushed further into the democratic camp at the expense of the support of his own House. This young leader is having to walk a dangerous tightrope between conservatism and change, the price of failure could result in not only his own demise but that of Nevareion as well.
