The title or rank of Marshal of Uudestaan (Kieli: Uudesen Marsalkka) is the highest rank possible in the Uudesan military, and is very rarely awarded. It is a special rank usually given to a single military figure who then controls every aspect of the armed forces, normally through a time of crisis, and can do so with almost complete autonomy from the ruling Government. The title can only be awarded by the Government, and traditionally is given down directly from the King, though in recent times this has been changed to a bipartisan agreement in Parliament.

History

The rank of Marshal is a result of the Ajjyk Codes, written in roughly 2543 BCE (STS) which stipulated that the King of Uudestaan would have direct control over all military affairs, with a level of advisors above the actual Generals.

Before the Codes, it believed many Generals held the power that the Marshal would later have themselves, but perhaps the Ajjyk Codes was a devious attempt to solidify the rule of the incumbent Sajyyk Dynasty who knew all too well that powerful Generals often fought among themselves for complete dominance of the region. The Ajjyk Codes also made clear the ancient belief that the King was a representative of the Uudesan God, Jumala, so to actually challenge Him was an act of blasphemy, as well as high treason, and that was enough to keep the religious-bound folk of Uudestaan from supporting any attempt to overthrow the King. Uudestaan however has been unusually blessed with generally fine leadership.

The very first “Marshal of Uudestaan” came about roughly three hundred years after the Ajjyk Codes, when Uudestaan had to fend off a Brejik invasion from the north east. Hoping to destabilise the country, Brejik agents managed to poison King Eran III leaving him seriously ill. Eran was left unable to run the country but was able to order his must trusted General, Yyoiken to Marshal the country’s defences and armies. The term given to Yyoiken was Marshal of Uudestaan. Yyoiken was able to repel the Brejik army, and when King Eran recovered, Eran resumed his role as head of the armed forces.

From then on, it became custom that the rank was appointed only temporarily while Uudestaan was in danger and the King was not capable of effective leadership. This has caused gaps of perhaps many centuries between different Marshals.

The Marshals of Uudestaan

There have been in total, nine different people to hold the rank of Marshal of Uudestaan.

Of those, only one has held the title twice (Hakkinen), and only three have held the title till their death (Hakkinen, Golasjorg – who was killed in battle – and Kovalavien) Juhani also stands out as to the slightly ambiguous matter of his actual gender, with some claiming Juhani was, in fact, female. That is a matter for great debate among Uudesan historians.
