Cobdenian Army

Structure

The structure of the Cobdenian Army is complex, due to the different origins of its various constituent parts. It is broadly split into the Regular Army (full-time soldiers and units) and the Territorial Army (part-time soldiers and units).

In terms of its military structure it has two parallel organisations, one administrative and one operational.

Administrative:

Corps, which is a grouping by common function, such as Gubernatorial Corps of Signals.

  • Divisions administrating all military units, both Regular and TA, within a geographical area.
    • Brigade in a non fighting capacity
      • Regiment, which is a grouping of battalions most commonly found in the Infantry. It is also the correct name for the Corps sized grouping of Artillery regiments.

Operational: Operational units are formed only when required, and often very wildly from administrative units. For example, an infantry regiment is never used operationally

Corps made up of two or more Divisions

  • Division made up of two or three Brigades with an HQ element and support troops. Commanded by a General or Lieutenant-General
    • Brigade made up of three Battalions an HQ element and associated support troops. Commanded by a Brigadier or Major-General
      • Battalion of about 700 soldiers, made up of five companies commanded by a Lieutenant-Colone
        • Company of about 100 soldiers, typically in three platoons, commanded by a Major].
          • Platoon of about 30 soldiers, commanded by a Second Lieutenant or Lieutenant.
            • Section of about 8 to 10 soldiers, commanded by a Corporal.

A number of element of the Cobdenian Army use alternative terms for Battalion, Company and Platoon, especially corps and cavalry (both horse and mechanised) units. In the cavalry, Regiment, Squadron and Troop in place of Battalion, Company and Platoon. The same goes for the corps. The Gubernatorial Regiment of Artillery are unique in using the term Regiment in place of both Corps and Battalion, they also replace Company with Battery and Platoon with Troop.

Gubernatorial Navy

The Gubernatorial Navy is divided into six fleets, the Home Fleet and Battlecruiser Fleet (which operates in Home Waters, but is consdiered seperate from the Home Fleet), the Antartican Fleet, the Atlantic Fleet, The Pacific Fleet, and The Indian Fleet. Each is Commanded by an Admiral of the Fleet. Fleets are comprised of:

  • Battle Squadrons which are commanded by an Admiral, formed of two divisions the secondary of which is commanded by a Rear-Admiral. These are comprised by four battleships in each division, i.e. eight in a squadron
  • Battlecruiser Squadrons which are commanded by an Admiral and are comprised of four battlecruisers
  • Aeroplane Carrier Squadrons, which are commanded by an Admiral and are comprised of two carriers, each containing six to eight flights of aeroplanes and one HQ Flight. Each flight is commanded by a GAF Flight Lieutenant, excepting the HQ flight, which is commanded by a Wing Commander
  • Cruiser Squadrons, which are commanded by a Vice-Admiral and are comprised of four Heavy Cruisers
  • Light Cruiser Squadrons, which are commanded by a Vice-Admiral and are comprised of four light cruisers
  • Destroyer Flotillas, which are commanded by a Commodore First Class or a Rear-Admiral and are comprised of between 10 to 20 destroyers
  • Submarine Flotillas, which are commanded by a Commodore Second Class (who serves on the supply ship) and are comprised of 20 submarines

In addition to this, the fleets are served by auxiliary supply ships of the Gubernatorial Fleet Auxiliary. GFA ships are government owned mechant ships under naval control and provide supply, rescue, coaling, and repair ships the the Gubernatorial Navy.GFA personnel are civilians who wear Merchant Navy-style uniforms and rank insignia and who are under naval discipline when the vessel is engaged on warlike operations. GFA vessels are manned predominantly by the civilians, augmented with regular Gubernatorial Navy personnel to perform specialised military functions. Their numbers are too numerous to list here, and vary often.
