From the 3rd Imperial Army

Edros Anentophras stood calmly beside the cannon batteries as they rained death upon advancing Zagorladians. The hill upon which the Akaeian camp rested had cost many Akaeian lives, and with Akaeian troops now firmly entrenched the Zagorladians suffered even worse.

"Praise God that the moon was out tonight."

He commented to no one in particular. The simple wodden fortifications around the camp helped the defending men as volley after volley poured out against the attackers. The site, truly a gem, cost thousands of Akaeians to take, but now was saving thousands more from the vigorous Zagorlad onslaught. Across the valley, the Zagorlad army had set up camp, at a strategic position overlooking the road to Ongro.

It would cost yet more lives to take. And any who retreated to the mountains could come down behind the army at any turn, disrupting supplies to retaking key positions. The best answer to this issue would be to take Ongro.
