Poldi’sk is a large city in the United Kingdom, home to the government of Novikov and functions as the main gateway into and out of the Novikovian islands. Largely laid to waste by UK armed forces during the Azazian-Novikovian War, the city has begun to rebound from the massive investments by both the private and public sectors.

History

By the late 20th century, Poldi’sk emerged as the centre of Novikovian politics as the capital of the socialist republic. However, its obscurity in the ancient history of Novikov would do little to protect it during its darkest hour, the Siege of Poldi’sk during the Azazian-Novikovian War. The bombardment of the capital lasted for days without relent from the Azazian Grand Fleet stationed just off the coast, the bombardment with conventional weapons coming as revenge for the destruction of a UK city with a nuclear weapon days before.

Economy

The Port of Poldi'sk

Like the rest of Novikov, the immediate aftermath of the war saw the economy completely collapse with rampant and uncontrolled inflation devastating the Novikovian Euro, which preceded the Oceania Pound before its official adoption with the integration of Novikov in mid-2006. During the war and the bombardment in particular, however, the Royal Navy took great pains to limit the damage inflicted upon the massive dock and port facilities in the city, as Poldi’sk was to become the main seaport used by UK forces during the invasion and occupation of Novikov.

The safety of the port proved the city’s salvation, as many other Novikovian port cities such as Duma, Zvolen, and Kožice suffered debilitating damage from combined Royal Navy and Royal Air Force attacks throughout the entirety of the war. While Parliament has appropriated funds to restoring the ports of the aforementioned cities, in the years to the completion the city of Poldi’sk will handle most if not all the major import and export traffic – the fees for the use of the port facilities bringing in a substantial foreign currency and extremely valuable Oceania Pounds to both the local government and the broader Novikovian regional administration.

Beyond serving as a transportation node for the country, the outer edges of the city have witnessed investment by Home Island based UK industrial firms either relocating from the Home Islands or reinvesting in industrial production in the UK. Industrial production in Poldi’sk centres upon heavy manufacturing, specifically production of other industrial equipment likely to be used in the expected lengthy reconstruction of the islands.
