The Ragnarok Submarine Launched Ballistic Missile (SLBM) is the primary method of strategic nuclear deterrent available to the Shildonian Navy. The Ragnarok is carried aboard the Titan Class Missile Submarine. The missile was developed in response to the growing proliferation of ballistic missile defence systems, which degraded the performance of the existing ballistic missile in service in the Shildonian Navy - the Trident - to the point where its value as a deterrent was set to become negligible.

Each Ragnarok is capable of carrying eight independantly targetable, manouverable reentry vehicles (MARVs), each with a yeild of up to 485 kilotons. The MARVs use scramjet engines to allow the warhead to change course and velocity during and after the reentry phase of the flight. However, this increased survivability comes at the cost of decreased accuracy. In spite of this, the size of the warhead means that the blast radius is greater than the CEP, meaning that in most scenarios the target would still be destroyed.

Ragnarok Satellite Interceptor

In recent years, the use of space-denial (sometimes crudely reffered to as "Anti-Satellite") weaponry has become increasingly integrated into Shildonian Military Doctrine. Such capabilities have, however, generally been developed under the auspices of the Shildonian Flying Corps.

With the development of the Ragnarok, the Shildonian Navy finally had a rocket powerful enough to place their own Space Denial weapons into orbit. A series of tests demonstrated the feasibility of the concept, but it was quickly pointed out that there was no way for the enemy to know that a Ragnarok Satellite Interceptor had been launched, rather than a Ragnarok SLBM until it was too late. The risk that a nuclear exchange could be initiated in this way was held to far outweigh the benefits of an alternate space denial platform, and the program was shelved.
