A regent, from the Latin regens "who reigns" is anyone who acts as head of state, especially when the monarch or similar executive officer of said state is indisposed. Thus, the common duty of a Regent is that of an acting deputy governor. In a monarchy, a regent usually rules due to the actual monarch's absence, incapacity or minority, and may also be elected to rule when the royal line of a nation has died out.

In some cases, however, Regent is simply a title bestowed to an elected executive official with extended duties and increased executive power (ex.Costa Bravo).
