The Kingdom of Otares is a huge, economically powerful nation, remarkable for its complete absence of social welfare. Its hard-nosed, hard-working population of 292 million are either ruled by a small, efficient government or a conglomerate of multinational corporations; it's difficult to tell which.

The large, pro-business government is mainly concerned with Defence, although Law & Order and Education are secondary priorities. Citizens pay a flat income tax of 16%. A powerhouse of a private sector is led by the Arms Manufacturing, Uranium Mining, and Automobile Manufacturing industries.

The streets are increasingly clogged with poverty-stricken beggars, medical lawsuits are out of control, the latest Harry Potter book is a bestseller, and membership in the state-owned Church of Otares is mandatory and all other faith organisations are banned. Crime is a problem. Otares's national animal is the grizzly bear, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the bit.
