History of The Citadel

This is an account of the History of The Citadel, as told by the founder. If you want to add in your own versions, please message me.

In the Beginning

For one to know the history of our region in its entirety, we must go back to before this region was even conceived. We go back to the time of the Xanthornian Empire. This region was led by Xanthorn, which at the time was being led by Lazarus Adalrome, a cousin of Inigo Montgomery, The Citadel's founder. The Xanthornian Empire was a miniscule region, that never got above ten members, founded some time late in August 2005. Exact dates are not known. After much work and stress, Lazarus Adalrome ejected all members, and left the region, hereby ending the Empire. Lazarus Adalrome left the game for the most part, merely maintaining his nation of Xanthorn, and residing in a backwater, ignoring the world. Inigo Montgomery realised that there had been serious problems with the Xanthornian Empire from the start. The region had not offered much different from other regions, and was also not very democratic at all, it was named after the founding nation for one thing! After ironing out what he hoped were the main problems, using his nation of Alazra, he founded The Citadel, on the 28th of October, 2005. Inigo vowed to never give up on it until it was perfect, and especially never to let anger rule him, eject everyone and let it die like Lazarus.

The First Age

This age of the region is the most uneventful recorded. The region was small, very small, happenings are hazy, as the idea of recording the history was not yet around, Inigo was just trying to get the region to survive from day to day. After lots of painstaking telegram recruiting, the region grew, but never above ten members. Inigo created a forum for the region, but little activity went on there. Nations that joined usually said a few things when they joined, then went idle. When Yeargania and Pogomo arrived, Inigo thought that maybe the time of inactivity had finally ended, but alas, they soon fell to idle apathy. The Age ends with The Citadel's future uncertain, and all Inigo can do is keep sending telegrams.

The Second Age

This was the first age of activity in the region, starting at around the beginning of December. The great nations of Argengrad, Tyrannical Misfits, Apesville and Gothic Rejects arrived, bringing with them the founding of a democratic government. After holding the first democratic elections, Inigo Montgomery became the first democratically elected President of the region on the 31st of November. His cabinet became Argengrad as Home Secretary, Tyrannical Misfits as Defence Minister, Apesville as Foreign Minister and Gothic Rejects as Chief Justice (a position since dissolved). With a cabinet of ministers, the regional activity grew, and its prospects grew. Regional members soared in number to circa 25 during the height of the Age. The region started to become known in the world, still obviously a backwater by Nationstates standards, but now it was something different. It had opportunity. The regional forums moved from their previous location of Proboards hosting to Invisionfree forum hosting. With the creation of the new forum on the 12th of January, the region started to role-play further. The Citadel Tribune was established, and the first copy is still on this current forum, along with most of the copies from January, saved through them being posted in The Citadel Embassy in Liberalia. However, the region's change in location also heralded the start of legislation. Inigo, or President Montgomery as he was by then, was anxious to put in some safeguards that would protect what he and the members had built. In an effort to keep the region secure and growing, the first Constitution was drafted, and made the official constitution of the region. Along with it came a string of laws, all democratically enforced, but nonetheless, they almost destroyed the region. In particular, the Mandatory UN Membership law, which required all members to join the UN, or be ejected. Numbers plummeted from near thirty back to almost below twenty. The apathy which dogs all regions caught up with The Citadel and idleness spread throughout the region and its forums. President Montgomery retracted all laws, and Constituion, in a desperate attempt to bring back members. But it was too late, the image of The Citadel had been blackened, it was too authoritarian, and President Montgomery gradually lost all but hope. Then, in the beginning of February, the final tragedy struck. Whilst on a Secret Service mission, President Montgomey's puppet joined the UN. The Nationstates Moderators discovered this, and ejected Alazra, the founding nation of The Citadel, and the puppet from the UN, and barred them from re-entry. Chaos ensued. After contacting Lazarus Adalrome, President Montgomery gained control of Xanthorn, a UN nation. President Montgomery moved Xanthorn into the region to replace Alazra, and informed people that they should not worry, Xanthorn was the President's nation now. However, Meggiddo, a nation that had been with the region for some weeks, but remained quiet, had leapt at the opportunity. Stating he would endorse all that endorsed him, he became the UN Delegate. Nations were confused as to who was the leader, but the leader of Meggiddo, calling himself James Davis, assured them he was the leader now. President Montgomery, disheartened and sickened by this betrayal, left the region, and founded a small region called Orthangild in which his nations could die peacefully. The forum was also deleted, and President Montgomery is uncertain why this happened. Meggiddo was not registered on the forum, and after contacting Invisionfree, they had no explanation.

The Third Age

Meggiddo set about changing the region. Issuing a statement, again under the persona of James Davis, he said that President Montgomery had wanted the region to be a secure little one, but he wanted it to be a UN superpower, he didn't want to deal with forums, he thought they were a waste of time. President Montgomery ignored him and did not return to the game for a week. When he returned, he found that one of the greatest nations of The Citadel, Argengrad, had left. In addition, Meggiddo had sent him messages requesting he hand over Alazra, and he could always come back to the region with Xanthorn, under the rule of Meggiddo. Anger filled President Montgomery with new energy, and he returned to The Citadel with determination. Meggiddo was ejected, cast out of the region forever for his treasonous acts against the region and its honourable members. President Montgomery re-created the forums, and called for great nations which had left such as Argengrad, United Capitalists and Really Nice Hats to return. After the administrative work of setting up the forum, President Montgomery set out to create a new Constituion, the Valentine's Constitution (so named for the date at which it was made the official Consitution), which would ensure an incident like the Meggiddo Uprising could never occur again. The main points of the Valentine's Constitution are making Alazra, the founder nation the Capitol of the region, and also handing control of it and its founder powers over to three Guardians. There are also some important other sections, which split up who holds the power in the region, making the ministers more powerful and equal, and the President closer to them. The second population boom arrived, and among the multitudes of nations that brought the member count above forty were Atheist Heathens, Lumenium and many more active nations. A new cabinet was appointed, with the new position of UN Delegate, and Intelligence Minister. Activity soars higher daily, and with it the name of The Citadel into the collective conscience of Nationstates. Now the region is warming up for the elections on February 20th. What will the Fourth Age bring?
