The Eurasian Republic general election, March 2006 was held on the 26th March 2006. The election marked many events, including the first conservative party to run in the region for election, the demise of the Liberal Socialist Party (TER), and the second successive election for Sir Callum McKayle.

Campaign

The election campaign was mainly a battle between the SDLP and LSP. The SDLP were expected to win by virtue of their huge numbers, and used these to put forward many campaign speeches. The party emphaisized themselves as the choice for a strong republic and built on the accomplishments of the interim and first-term SDLP governments.

The LSP campaign was one of change for a new Republic and was done by a combined force of Joseph Edwards and deputy leader Peter Heid's campaigning. There was much suggestion for change and improvement to existing measures.

Controversy

The LSP made a series of embarassing gaffes during the campaign. The first real mistake the party made was in Parliament, when the annoyed Edwards let his tounge slip and made a fairly insulting comment slip out against the deputy leader of the SDLP. The opposing parties went on the attack, calling the leader 'overbearing and rude'. The leader quickly apologized repeatedly.

The next major trouble was the LSP policy of a referenda on refounding. This was ripped apart by the experienced members of the SDLP. The deputy leader called a snap referendum which was denounced for its unprofessionalism. It was later referred to as a poll, but showed overwhelmingly a majority against the plans. The SDLP attacked on the 'two-tier' system proposed by Joseph Edwards, who suggested that dual citizenship between the old and new region could be instituted while nations crossed over.

The LSP was hit with a crushing blow with the resignation from the Republic of LSP deputy leader Peter Heid. This severely damaged the credibility of the party to govern, and it isd argued contributed to their fall at the election.

The results caused severe trouble in Cabinet. The LSP had no seats at all (leading to a LSP delegate coalitioning with government to get into Cabinet) and the MCP two despite having one member and having fought a non-entity of a campaign.

Results

The end result was that the SDLP won again, with a barely reduced vote share but a slightly increased majority. The LSP was destroyed with one delegate vote, not even giving them representation in the Cabinet (this was later sorted by the floor-crossing for the length of the Parliament of Edwards.). The MCP secured 25% of the vote, an impressive result. The DCLP and NLP did not gain any votes.
