Torin Leadership
Odhrán Torin is the current Prime Minister (and Premier) of Niploma. He heads the left-wing People's Coalition and although is a 'light' socialist he is also a noted reformer.
People's Coalition Speech
In the run up to the leadership race the fiery Torin gave a speech to a conferance of delegates of Coalition members. Prior to the-then PM. Robert giving a speech Torin was already in the midst of a press-circus which eventually led to a mass support for the young Torin.
It was his speech however that won over party members. It was a lively speech without any notes. Upon a brisk walk onto stage Torin began his speech. He outlined his key politics;
- 'I am a Socialist. I am also a Reformist.'
This was an important part of Torin's speech. He was the lone candidate who believed light socialism could work. However, he realised much modernisation, and privitisation, would also have to go ahead. Torin was prepared to compramise.
- Comabating Crime
Although a social-liberal Torin demanded a quick fix to Law & order in Niploma. He said there would be cuts to Law & Order and more attention to education and programs to get criminals off the street. He was prepared to have criminals work in needy jobs rather than go to prison.
- No more 'one-party politics'
The policy that caused the largest problem for Torin. Torin was prepared to work well with the rival leader, McKibben, for the best for Niploma. When questioned over a Coalition-Government with the Libertarian Reform Party Torin failed to give an answer.
- Honesty
A direct attack upon both ex-Pm Robert and McKibben Torin promised to return 'dignity' and 'honesty' to politics.
Robert/ Torin Years
Robert Years '94-'06
Although a hardline socialist Robert was forced to re-introduce ccapitalism into Niploma. Free-Trade failed instantly with GDP running wild and radical tax levels introduced. Robert failed in the transition and left the country on the balance. A poor-socialist state to the left. An anarchaic enonomy to the right that Niploma could not cope with.
On social issues it is argueable that Robert made a huge failure. When he made the sudden jump to a free-market crime rapidly increased. Analysts claim this was due to the widespread poverty amongst the poorest and also due to little Law & Order spending. Robert attacked crime by increasing Law & Order spending four-fold. This led to what critics called Big Brother State and simply caused criticism. Law and Order spending was poorely distrubuted and much was pocketed. Crime soared. Prisons could not cope. Robert was eventually forced out of his job and his new Coalition party, the People's Coalition only barely won the election.
Robert was Niploma's first PM to give into the southern seperatists (see Southern Seperatist Movement) and allowed talks to begin regarding autonomy and the a much talked about southern government. Mid-talks Robert lost his job as PM and Torin, a sympathist, took over talks.
Upon leaving office in 2006, Robert left Torin with a huge job.
