Ungava and the Olympics
Ungava is a stunning, beautiful metropolis of twenty-two million in the International Democratic Union. It is located on the eastern shores of Yuril Bay, which divides the Province of East Hiel, Domnonia, from the nation of Hiel.
Through the cities and provinces development, six guiding principals have never been compromised. These principles will be applied to any and all NSOlympic event hosted in East Hiel.
Ecological limits Society must live within the earth’s capacity to sustain life.
Interdependence Economic and social prosperity are dependent upon the natural environment.
Long-term view Today’s decisions and actions must not compromise the choices available to future generations.
Inclusiveness Participation by all people must be promoted and decisions must be based on input from key stakeholders.
Equity People must be empowered to live sustainably and resources must be used fairly and efficiently to meet basic human needs worldwide.
Healthy Communities Community health and quality of life is integral to sustainability.
Venues
The venues available for the Ungava 2006 Olympic Bid stretch over a 70-kilometre zone from the shores of Yuril Bay, through Ungava’s downtown centre and north to the snowy peaks of the mountain city of Arcium.
Drawing on new and existing facilities, the goal is to create spectacular theatres for sport that provide top conditions for athletes and a welcome place for spectators to capture the excitement of competition.
Greater Ungava Region The 2006 Olympic Winter Games events in Ungava would include curling, figure skating, ice hockey and short track speed skating. Speed skating will take place in Alaris. The Hiel Mountain Range near Jgnak is the site of the snowboard and freestyle skiing events. Ceremonies will be held in the 55,000-seat Confederation Stadium in Ungava's city centre.
Arcium The 2006 Olympic Winter Games alpine and nordic skiing (cross country, biathlon, nordic combined), ski jumping, sliding events (bobsleigh, luge, skeleton) would take place in the Arcium region, in the midst of the Hiel Mountain Range peaks.
Schedule A schedule of event times and places will be made available when a start date for the 2006 Winter Games is made official. We see no point in drawing up this information at the moment.
Cultural Events
Cultural NSOlympiad The Cultural NSOlympiad will run from the day Ungava's bid succeeds right up to the 2006 NSOlympic Winter Games.
The Olympiad will begin in the host city of Ungava and also in Arcium, with a collection of activities that highlight our local cultures and creative artists. From there, it will extend across the interweb to involve a full range of Nationstates' creative communities and national cultural institutions. We would hold online art exhibitions aswell.
NSOlympic Arts Festival The Festival will be both a celebration of the Olympic spirit and a showcase of the International Democratic Unions art and culture, together with the best the rest of Nationstates has to offer. It will use more than 25 different forums across the internet –spilling onto the screens, printers and public spaces, and into media providers – to present a blend of traditional and contemporary arts and cultural experiences.
Intellectual Muscle Intellectual Muscle – an international conference series for students and established leaders from colleges and universities, sport federations and scientific and cultural institutions – will foster a global exchange of ideas on key issues related to the Olympics and health.
Visiting Artists To capture and reflect each nation’s participation in the 2006 NSOlympic Winter Games, we will invite each country to include a nationally recognized artist as part of its team. Just as in ancient times, the artists will create works that reflect their experience of the Games, and help us make the NSOlympic Arts Festival a truly international event.
We will develop an exhibition about our Domnonian arts and cultural heritage for the NSWiki, and include materials from the best around Nationstates.
Social Inclusion
Ungava has developed a platform for Inner-City and ethnic minority inclusion to include in its bid and a promise to continue these initiatives long after the games. This statement commits us to working together toward specific goals and legacies in the areas of social sustainability and inner-city inclusion. We will provide opportunities for everyone to participate in the 2006 Winter Games – regardless of income, cultural background or physical ability.
Access With barrier-free venues and transportation, these Games will be as accessible as possible to people with a disability. By providing 50,000 event tickets to social agencies for their clients, people of all ages and from all walks of life will have the opportunity to see sport at its best.
Urban Native participation We are currently working with the Greater Ungava Native Commitee to identify and develop sport, culture and economic development opportunities for the urban Native community.
Long-term employment and business development The Olympic Games last just a few weeks each, but the planning for them takes years. Wherever possible, jobs for the 2006 Winter Games, if held in Ungava, will not be limited to short-term opportunities; training will be transferable to other jobs after the Games.
The inner-city Among other initiatives, our inner-city commitments provide for specific safety and security initiatives during Games time. We will also ensure continued delivery of health and social services during the Games. If the Ungava bid is successful, inner-city sections of the city will be tranformed with the restoration of major sporting and cultural centres as well as the restoration of vacant buildings. Rather than constructing new housing for international competitors in the suburbs, the city and federal government have pledged to restore residential and office buildings that have become vacant in recent years. After the games, these buildings will become fist rate housing for low-income families. Inner-city Ungava's citizens are ethnically diverse and talented, the perfect setting for the Olympic games.
