Geography

Government

The General Assembly is a unicameral government body, comprised of a single elected Representative, with a four year term, from each of the 197 member-states of the UEC. The General Assembly functions as the main legislative group of the UEC's government, passing what are technically called resolutions, but carry the weight of actual laws, nowadays. The Security Council is a special legislative group, within the General Assembly. It is composed of the representatives of the USA, Argentina, China, Russia, India, Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Saudi Arabia, Korea, Japan, Brazil, Tanzania, South Africa, and Israel. The Security Council appoints the Secretary-General and the UCJ judges, holds some executive powers in the UEC, runs commissions, and deals with the day-to-day matters of governing Earth and its offworld colonies. The Secretary-General is an appointed, elected every two years, who works alongside the Security Council in governing Earth, commands the UEC's military and police forces, and presides over the General Assembly. He can be re-elected an inexhaustible number of times. The UCJ, or Unified Court of Justice is the UEC's supreme court, boasting twelve justices that are appointed for a period of five years and may be appointed a maximum amount of three times.

Military & Law Enforcement

Terran Defense Headquarters

TDHQ, or Terran Defense Headquarters is the body which, under the Secretary-General, commands and governs the military and police forces of the Unified Earth Command. It is an advisory body to the Secretary-General, including the top brass of all of UECs military branches. Based in Sydney, Australia, the TDHQ is further divided into the Home Security Administration and the Colonial Military Administration.

Home Security Administration

The HSA is the division of the TDHQ that is responsible for law enforcement and security on Earth and, as a general proposition, on most Terran colonies. Contained within the Home Security Administration are the Terran Police Force, the Special Bureau of Investigation, the Earth-Space Intelligence Community, and the National Guard units.

Colonial Military Administration

The Colonial Military Administration is the security office that is tasked with most of the more militaristic responsibilities. It maintains and commands the various attached and connected military bodies, including the Terran Starfleet, the United Nations Marine Corps, and the United Nations Surface Forces.

History

2049 – 2053
The People’s Republic of China begins to bolster its space program, at this point, tripling its former funding. It is somewhere in this period that the Central Intelligence Agency of the US discovers a classified Chinese project to land on Mars. Even further to their surprise, they find that the Chinese have undergone considerable progress, far surpassing NASA and other space agencies, making this a realistic goal. At the same time in China, however, masses of peasants have been protesting their state of poverty for the last five decades, only to worsen as China takes away spending from its social services, in order to add to its space program. Approaching China, the US offers an enormous aid package with the potential to halt the angry protestors, in return for co-operation in the fields of space and military technology.

2058 - 2065
The United States and China announce publicly that they have successfully landed men on Mars, to the shock and awe of the rest of the world. Soon, they jointly organize a project to colonize the Moon. Sensing the need for much more funding, however, they begin to accept other nations into their space program, through the International Galactic Exploration Treaty of 2064. Besides the US and China, New Zealand, Australia, the UK, Russia, Israel, and Canada also become signatories to the treaty.

The first Earth colony on another planet, Mars, is established, under the governance of the International Galactic Exploration Organization, which has since been transformed into a body of the United Nations.

2090 – 2111 In response to hundreds of enormous acts of genocide and crimes against humanity in Africa and South America, the United Nations begins to create its own armed forces branch, which goes on to merge with NATO. At the same time, it expands its galactic empire onto other planets in the Milky Way, attracting the attention of a far-off race of aliens.

20112 - 2014
The Lionmen of Nidea, called so by the people of Earth (for their semblance to the animal), launch an attack upon one of the United Nations’ outer colonies, obliterating it and taking its inhabitants as slaves. Over the next few years, the technologically superior Lionmen continue this process, systematically invading UN colonies.

2115 - 2118
The United Nations begins a mass build-up of its military forces, at times incorporating whole military services of other nations. It is also in this period that they unveil the first offensive space weapons, mass producing orbital platforms, as well as space bombers and fighters.

2118 – 2197
The Lionmen eventually discover Planet Earth and begin a large-scale invasion. Under Commandant Mikhail Sergeiov, the United Nations Military Corps resists the Lionmen’s invasion of Earth, succeeding in very much a Pyrrhic victory. Slowly, human technology advances and the tide of the war turns. By this time, disaster has turned the United Nations into the central government of earth.

2198
The people of Earth win the war by obliterating the planet of Nidea, and most of the Lionmen with it. The remaining Lionmen, or Nideans, are forced into military service on Earth. The now-Secretary-General, Mikhail Sergeiov, begins what is known as the Sergeiov Protocol. The Unified Earth Command continues to develop technology, but maintains complete isolation from the rest of the universe and halts all colonization efforts.

Resolution # 47,986 of the UEC passes, making the Sergeiov Protocol null and void.
