The Vanagos Province is made up of three small islands, Mesa de Oro, San Cristobel and San Theodoros.

History

The islands were first discovered by the Portuguese explorer, Lorenzo Cristobel Vanagos in 1146 AD. Vanagos was a merchant who had moved to the Los Kanteena Island and had decided to explore the small uninhabited islands off of Ossiana. It was by mistake that Lorenzo's ship, the Princesa do Céuzessa, was blown too far south in a violent storm and by pure accident made land fall on the Mesa de Oro island. Lorenzo found that the island was inhabited by a small community of hunter-gatherer tribesmen, known as the Olhofino peoples, numbering around 1000 who welcomed Lorenzo and his people.

Lorenzo returned to Los Kanteena a year later and spread the word that he had found new lands which he had named Mesa de Oro, translated to 'Table of Prayers.' Around 300 settlers joined Lorenzo on his return journey to Mesa de Oro. The new settlers on the island founded the small coastal village, Campo de Baixo and lived in peace with the Olhofino peoples.

Lorenzo was soon made aware by the Olhofino peoples that there were two more islands south of Mesa de Oro that were inhabited by rival tribes of the Olhofino peoples. The rival tribe of the Olhofino people, were the Caralisoa tribe who had come to dominate the two islands south of Mesa do Oro. Lorenzo was warned by the Olhofino that the Caralisoa tribe numbered around 4000 people on the two islands and that they would not welcome him as the Olhofino people had done.

Lorenzo recruited 300 mercenaries from nearby islands and 200 Olhofino warriors and set sail for the southern islands. They first made landfall on the larger of the two islands, which Lorenzo named San Cristobel, after his grandfather. The Caralisoa people attacked Lorenzo and his men as the Olhofino had said, but after a number of small skirmishes, Lorenzo overrun the island and took nearly 2000 prisoners. This was repeated on the next island which he named San Theodoros after his father. All males captured from the Caralisa tribe were sent to Mesa do Oro, where they vecame slaves to wealthy land owners whilst the women of the Caralisa tribe were distributed and sold amongst the new settlers of the three islands.
