It is difficult to tell where the omnipresent government stops and the rest of society begins, but it juggles the competing demands of Education, Social Welfare, and Healthcare. The average income tax rate is 100%. A robust private sector is led by the Book Publishing industry, followed by Uranium Mining and Gambling.

Programmes of questionable content are shown at peak-hours, people reciting Shakespeare have become a common sight, the nation's youth is held blameless for all crimes, and UFO sightings are listed daily in the morning news. Crime is well under control. New Corsimenia's national animal is the Corsimenian parrot, which is also the nation's favorite main course, and its currency is the doubloon.

Government

First Admiral: Theodoric Arculiann
Prime Minister: Sir George Selkirk
President: Otto Callahan
Crown Prince: His Majesty Lord Tamrus V
Government:

  • The First Admiral is elected for life and is the ultimate arbiter of justice and law in New Corsimenia. The people trust and honor him, and should he ever become too powerful, or abuse his authority, provisions exist in the Constitution of New Corsimenia for his impeachment.
  • The Prime Minister is appointed by the President and serves in a primarily ceremonial capacity in addition to being Chief Justice of the High Court of New Corsimenia.
  • The President is elected every five years by popular vote, and serves as the primary administrative official of the nation, with the aid of his Cabinet. He is independent of the First Admiral, and is not necessarily bound by the First Admiral's whims.
  • The Crown Prince (great-great-grandson of Tamrus the Magnificent, founder of Corsimenia) holds no power, but retains the splendor and grandeur of the old Corsimenian throne, and is frequently seen at public events. The Crown Prince is currently fourteen years of age, and will become King (though still powerless) at the age of eighteen. The First Admiral is also technically Lord Regent.
  • New Corsimenia is divided into nine provinces, each with its own Provincial Minister, and provinces are divided into a variable number of states. Each Province has its own Provincial Senate headed by the Minister, with members from each of its states, and the Ministers are also members of the Admiral's Provincial Council (APC), a group that meets in Tarkhos to advise the President and First Admiral on regional affairs. There is also the Corsimenian House of Representatives, an enormous legislative body composed of state representatives that deals with national affairs. Elections are held every three years statewide for Provincial Senators and National Representatives, and every five years provincewide for Provincial Ministers.

Society

  • Ethnicities: Primarily Caucasian with a few Hispanics, though recently relaxed immigration policies are enabling increased numbers of ethnic groups to come to New Corsimenia. There are also the Filaki, an aboriginal group subjugated brutally by Tamrus III, who are starting to make a comeback into New Corsimenia society after being relegated to tiny islands, labor camps and "reservations."
  • Religions: New Corsimenia has no official religion, but tolerates all religions. Christianity and Islam predominate, while at least thirty percent of the population is atheistic or agnostic. Judaism and Buddhism are also beginning to gain footholds in New Corsimenia. There are a variety of religious sects: the Water-Bearers, an ocean-worshipping New Age group; the Druids, who practice arcane mysticism and healing in Corsimenia's deep northern forests; and the Keepers of Bone, known among the media and populace as Bonies, who have recently come under scrutiny for their agressive proselytizing and dangerous initiation rituals. The Filaki also have their own native religion.
  • Languages: Though High Corsimenian (a mixture of Latinic and Slavic languages) is the official language, it is used only in official edicts and ceremonial events. Low Corsimenian, a combination of High Corsimenian and English, with a fair bit of French and Portuguese thrown in, is spoken by almost everyone. Most New Corsimenian schoolchildren are fluent in three or more languages. Filaki, once made illegal by Tamrus III, is making a resurgence among young Filaks. Because of the large quantity of ships from many nations passing through New Corsimenia's ports, a variety of "dock pidgins" exist, used among sailors and warehouse workers. The piers of Tarkhos are a linguist's dream due to the constantly evolving languages spoken there. The National Dictionary, a vast government-funded project, is ongoing.
  • Economy: Sea-based trade is the primary source of money for New Corsimenia. Tarkhos is a hub for many commercial shipping companies, and countless indepent ships also operate from there. Piracy is declining thanks to crackdowns by the Corsimenian Coast Guard, but it is still a flourishing business. Many types of wood are harvested from the northern forests, and copper, iron, and silver mines are also a large source of income. Factories are government-subsidized, in an attempt to halt the economic plunges cause by past ultraliberal governments. The New Corsimenian automotive manufacturer Selene is a major employer, and has a massive factory in the western city of Farras. Small businesses are heartily encouraged, but large corporations still tend to shy away from New Corsimenia due to the crippling taxes and restrictions that still exist for them. Removing these inhibitions is a major cause of heated debate in the Corsimenian House of Representatives. Tourism is on the rise.
