History of Steenhuffel

Over the past two millennia, the area that is now known as Steenhuffel has seen significant demographic, political and cultural upheavals.

Government and Politics

Provincial Government

Each of Steenhuffel's eight provinces has its own parliament. The leader of the largest party (or coalition) in the parliament becomes the First Minister of the province and is able to draw a cabinet from the parliament. The provincial governments have a great deal of power and their responsibilities include (but are not limited to) education, transport, healthcare, and culture.

Federal Government

At the federal level, the government of Steenhuffel is divided into three branches.

The Federal Parliament is composed of 730 MFPs elected under the Single Transferrable Vote system of proportional representation. The Parliament is the primary legislative body and controls the federal budget as well as being responsible for foreign affairs, development aid, defence, military, police, economic management, social welfare, social security transport, energy, telecommunications, and scientific research.

The upper chamber, the Senate, is comprised 24 members and is primarily concerned with providing constitutional oversight for both the Parliament and the executive. There are three senators per province, of which one is nominated by the First Minister of the province, one by the provincial judiciary (various methods of selection used) and one directly elected. The contrary nature of Steenhuffelites means that the First Minister's appointee and the eleceted Senator tend to have completely opposite political standpoints. The Senate cannot propose new legislation but can block any law if it is deemed unconstitutional and is able to provide limited supervision of taxation by provincial authorities. The first task of any new Senate is to select the Federal President.

The executive is made up of the Federal President - who is elected by the Senate - and his/her cabinet. Although in theory the President is able to propose any legislation and is ultimately responsible for the state of the nation, he/she is heavily constrained by the Federal Parliament, the Senate and the Provincial parliaments.

Culture

Steenhuffel cultural life has tended to concentrate within each province. The shared element is less important, because there are no multilingual universities, no common media, and no single, common large cultural or scientific organisation where all three linguistic groups are represented. Aside from these differences, Steenhuffel is well-known for its visual arts and cinema.

Steenhuffel is well known for its cuisine. Many highly ranked restaurants can be found in the high-impact gastronomic guides, such as the Michelin Guide. Steenhufel also produces over more varieties of beer per capita than any other nation. Steenhuffelites have a reputation for loving food in all its forms and, being so centrally located, is able to draw together a wide variety of international styles.
