History

Founded in 2003 quite by mistake, West Pacific as a nation on NationStates has seen sporatic activity over the years. After only a couple days on NS the West Pacific joined the New Nations Alliance where it was instrumental in shaping this alliance. Within weeks the New Nations Alliance had grown to such size that new positions had to be created to maintain order within the Alliance. Samtonia Who had been acting as President of the NNA retained that position, most of the elections for offices within the NNA were landslide victories for one of the parties, the only election that remained close right down to the wire was the battle for the lucrative position of Foreign Minister between The Zoogie People and West Pacific. In a statistical dead heat, The Zoogie People won the office when the West Pacific dropped out of the running to instead accept the position of Defense Minister.

Tension had already been high in the NNA, but things reached a boiling point when the Anti-Terror Army was caught attempting to embezzle funds and was susequently removed from office and forced out of the NNA. Hudecia took over as Treasurer when the Anti-Terror Army left. ATA would not ride off quietly into the night however. Only hours later the ATA, by far the oldest and strongest of the nations of the NNA, declared war on the Alliance and sent a fleet to invade West Pacific. Appealing to the humanity of the international community, the NNA was able to rally support to their side, ending the threat that the ATA had posed. Following this move there was a deep rift in the NNA, West Pacific a few others wanted to punish ATA for threatening the security of the NNA, however a majority of the alliance wanted nothing to do with this as war with ATA would have surely meant war with AutoMagFreek who had invested trillions into rebuilding ATA and was trying to protect their 'ally'. Trying to use their office to leverage in this dispute, West Pacific, as Defense Minister, threatened to close down NNA bases in Samtonia, The Zoogie People and Hudecia and preventing troops from those countries from being rotated out from their bases in the West Pacific. Hudecia, as Treasurer, then responded by cutting funding for the Defense Department, leaving West Pacific the option of leaving the bases open and letting the troops return home or attempting to finance the NNA's military forces alone, which would surely bancrupt the nation. In the end West Pacific relented in face of enormous opposition both from within the NNA and from outside forces.

Following almost three decades of intense, heavily funded research, the West Pacific government recently announced that interstellar space travel was not feasable with current technologies and that the researchers who were working on such projects are now convinced that space travel would never become a reality like that seen in Science Fiction movies. Following the governments announcement the Dominion was sent into an economic recession, grants that had been used to fund such research were immediately cancelled, hundreds of thousands of people associated with these programs went into unemployment, this has since caused a trickle down effect into other industries such as information technologies, steel manufacturers, and the aeronautics industry as they have invested hundreds of billions of dollars into the development of factories to construct the components for the spacecraft that were thought to become a reality. However as the previously neglected War Department begins to rebuild those who are unemployed can seek employment at defense contractors or enlist in the armed forces. The Army, Navy and Marine Corps will see the largest boost while the Air Force will lose funds as they had been managing the funding of the research projects into the possiblity of interstellar space travel.
