Established as a trading colony around 600 by the Ionian city of Phocaea, Akaeia was quickly surpassed in importance by Massalia at the mouth of the Rhone in importance for trade in the western Mediterranean. The city of Akaeia was destroyed along with it's larger neighbor in 49 B.C.E. by Roman forces, but was later rebuilt as part of an effort to protect transalpine passes. The construction of the first Roman road in Gallia Narbonensis provided economic developmetn to the citizens of Akaeia, when it was built past the city and over into the Roman heartland. The city remained predominantly Greek in culture, and the theater was more prominent than the gladiators within Akaeian domains. After the beginning of Romanization, civic improvements began to appear. Several senatorial families built villas in the surrounding countryside.

In the Beginning

As the Empire began to collapse, the Akaeians found themselves under less and less external domination. The assembly was reintroduced into Akaeian political life in 420 C.E., and the region became semi-autonomous. Goths invaded the area repreatedly from 430-460, but the Akaeian militias managed to beat them back from the immediate vicinity of the city. With the fall of Rome, the Akaeians became completely independant. They appointed Ioden Solaneos the first Emperor of Akaeia, and immediately began securing the 2 major passes into Akaeian lands. Foedetis Nakantus and Foedetis Kleotensis secured these locations, and the rehabitation of an ancient Gallic fort to the north of the valley, renamed Xenar, served to portect the Akaeian people when more germanic invasions succeeded in 480-500. Unable to do much more than sit outside the walls of Akaeia, which developed a strong navy which successfully supplied them with the necessary goods to fend off a siege, they either moved on or laid down their arms and entered into the Akaeian populace as free landowning peasants. The Akaeian [[language]] developed as a result of the cultural assimilation of [[Latin]], [[Greek]], and the destruction of the strict Akaeian grammar due to the high survival rate for free peasants compared with learned men.

Traditionally Akaeia's history begins with the creation of the first humans. In the beginning, when the world had been made, and the Universe was set to spin in an appropriate fashion, the 10 Eternals sat in council to decide what to do with creation, which was vast and lifeless. And so they decided that they would make man to work the Earth for them, and they sent Dauveron, one of their own, to make a man and a woman, but when he had gone they grew jealous, and each felt that the other was more powerful than they, and so they went out creating things that were better than the other's, and things to prey upon those things, and things to shake the Earth and disrupt the good that had been done, and it is because of this that the world is not paradise.

During the Byzantine reconquest of Italy, Akaeia realized the value of good relations with the Eastern Roman Empire. Byzantine and Akaeian nobiles intermarried and there was a fair degree of trade between the two peoples. Notable Byzantine families like the Palaeologi and Comneni only survive today in Akaeian bloodlines. Civil wars beginning in 1010 severly injured Akaeian power and stability, finally ending in 1038 with the rise of the Scenosix Emperors. Initially beloved, this dynasty squandered Akaeian funds and weaked Akaeian defenses to the extent that the capital fell in 1062 to Norman forces. Dauvan Iardaneos, elected by his fellow soldiers in 1063 at Xenar, began the long process of liberating Akaeian lands.

In the Beginning

And so the first man and first woman were made, and the Eternals conspired to make them and their decendants labor for them...
