Welcome
Hey, Beanish! Welcome to NSwiki. When you get a chance, tell us a bit about yourself on your User page.
I just paid a visit to the BookCrossing Forums, and now I understand why we suddenly have so many new BC players. Thanks! As to the wiki markup, you've only seen one of the more obvious possibilities. Check the link below for a LOT more options. Wiki markup is extremely easy for non-HTML users to learn, and it requires very little effort to get the basics right, but it's the interlinks, the so-called "free links", where wiki really shines. Give it a chance, ok?
You can sign your name on talk pages by using "~~~" for your username and "~~~~" for your username and a timestamp.
