As it has been near to the point where the important streets from Umptzow to Ellerstfurt and Miltenstein and the one from the north-west to Puerm and Aivhaven meat each other, it quickly developped into a rich commercial town. In 1550, it had for the first time more than 20,000 inhabitants and was the third biggest one of all towns in what is Avareelia today. Only Aivhaven (67,000 inhabitants) and Waldau-Gerbstein (41,000) were bigger. The merchants who had settled in Aivenburg built the gorgeous renaissance villas for which the old town is still famous in our days, aswell as the University of the Seven Arts (in 1555), the Cathedral of our Holy Virgin (in 1579) and the Aive Park (in 1603). | ||

History
Aivenburg has been founded in 1193 as Aiwwe Burkh near to a castle (german: Burg) at the river Aive.
