Many have noted the confusing nature of the overall name for Pacitalia's military, as ''defence forces'' usually signify an armed force or forces that are solely committed to defence of an entity (whether a city, a state or an organisation) on the ''condition'' of attack. However, the Pacitalian forces are known to perform offensive missions and endeavours around the world and so do not literally qualify as a defence force. The PDF is so called because the name ''Pacitalian Armed Forces'' has always applied to the land-forces branch of the military, and because the Pacitalian Defence Forces' primary objective is defence of the state.

The Pacitalian Defence Forces (Pacitalian: Forza Combinanta dal Defenzo della Repubblica Pacitaliana) consist of 84.3 million people in uniform. Approximately 675,000 serve in the special operations units of the PDF, called the Special Attack Force Delta (SAFD) and Elite Special Operations Task Forces (ESOF), and a further 17.9 million are considered reserve forces, or active through the Pacitalian Emergency Task Force. 406,273 of the 84.3 million are considered civilian employees. Pacitalia's defence budget equals about 3.4% of the GDP, and the current size of Pacitalia's forces equal about 1.41% of its total population of just under six billion.

Military branches

The PDF-FCDRP consists of five main parts - an armed force, a naval force, an air force, an emergency task force and an internationally respected special operations wing.

Conventional divisions

The Pacitalian Armed Forces (Pacitalian: Forza della Terra Pacitaliana) is the land-forces wing of the Pacitalian Defence Forces. The PAF-FdTP is the largest branch of the PDF, with approximately 38 million enrolled, including about 17 million reserves.

The Pacitalian Naval Forces (Pacitalian: Forza delle Nave Pacitaliana) is the naval wing of the Pacitalian Defence Forces. Pacitalia's prestigious naval traditions have greatly contributed to the current reputation of the country's naval forces and today the PNF remains a component member of the Organisation of Maritime Powers, which is arguably the most powerful naval alliance in the world today.

The Pacitalian Aeronautical Guard (Pacitalian: Forza Aeronautica Pacitaliana) is the air-force wing of the Pacitalian Defence Forces. It is the smallest of the three major branches of the Pacitalian Defence Forces but has seen numerous combat operations in its history, including the Roach-Busterian civil war in which the Forza Aeronautica participated in pro-liberation fighting against Doomani and Parthian aerofighters.

Special operations

Task forces and special forces

The Pacitalian Emergency Task Force (Pacitalian: Forza di Tascio all'Emergenzo Pacitaliana) is the international humanitarian and disaster response task force wing of the Pacitalian Defence Forces. The PETF is sent abroad to fulfill peacekeeping duties on behalf of the Pacitalian Defence Forces, but its resources are usually reserved for crisis and natural disaster management. The PETF is usually reserved for reserve forces that wish to enter military service and contribute positively to their surroundings, but do not wish to see or participate in combat operations.

Pacitalia's special operations forces are internationally renowned and widely respected for their efficiency, high level of training and their apparent invincibility. Obviously, they are not invincible, but their never-say-never attitude has earned them much admiration and respect from the rest of the world, most notably similar operations units in other nations' militaries.

Special Attack Force Delta (SAFD)

The SAFD was created in the early 1960s as a task force for special operations. Since then it has participated in numerous high-profile operations, including aiding in the liberation of Sarzonia in its late-2004 civil war (the second in that country's history), and major participation in the elimination of the Real Anime Liberation terrorist movement, most notably in a battle in the Comatican town of Springbrook.

Elite Special Operations Force (ESOF)

The ESOF was created under Timothy Ell's administration in 2005 as part of the once-secret Operation Deathchain. These forces are trained to a higher extent and nurtured to handle even more dangerous, physically- and psychologically-trying endeavours and incidents.

External cooperation

Within Pacitalia

The PDF extensively cooperates with intelligence agencies like the PCIC and Pacitalian Satellite Monitoring Agency, as well as with federal, provincial and local authorities and law enforcement in coordinating national defence and public safety strategy.

Outside Pacitalia

Pacitalia's military is involved in numerous military alliances and shares cooperative agreements with numerous countries, which involves joint training exercises and intelligence sharing. Pacitalia's military occupation of Hiroshiko following the Hiroshikan War, and its cooperation with Sarzonia in maintaining defensive occupation of various parts of the country is a prime example of this external cooperation.

Crest

The official crest of the Pacitalian Defence Forces is a central triangle, in red, pointing upwards, signifying the unity and brotherhood of the forces in defence of the republic. The white chevron above it signifies the word of the Christian faith (in a historical context only, as there is no relation between the PDF and any branches of Christianity) in leading soldiers of the Pacitalian republic and its ancestors -- Occidentalians, Romans etc -- to victory. The remaining white background signifies the good the Pacitalian Forces try to spread around the world through forceful or peaceful means, while the remaining red remembers the blood spilled in previous conflicts and the soldiers lost. Two cross-pointed rapiers on each side, one of gold-plated hilt and another of silver plating, flank the shield, while the official curso d'arma of the Pacitalian republic is positioned above.

Motto

The motto, Vindicatio fortis verus adversum maleficus, is Latin and, somewhat roughly, translates into English as Truly, bravely, defending against evil. Below the motto, a traditional ancient Roman inscription shows the importance of armed forces to the state. The inscription is also an honourific reflection of Caesar Augustus, the founder of the Roman colonies in Terra Occidentalia that would eventually form the Pacitalian republic.

Terminological obfuscations

Many have noted the confusing nature of the overall name for Pacitalia's military, as defence forces usually signify an armed force or forces that are solely committed to defence of an entity (whether a city, a state or an organisation) on the condition of attack. However, the Pacitalian forces are known to perform offensive missions and endeavours around the world and so do not literally qualify as a defence force. The PDF is so called because the name Pacitalian Armed Forces has always applied to the land-forces branch of the military, and because the Pacitalian Defence Forces' primary objective is defence of the state.
