Due to the devastation of much of the planet's early history during the wars and environmental devastation of the past millenium, as well as the continual construction of new buildings and infrastructure throughout the city, much of the its historical background has been lost.  However, what amounts remain have suggested that the city is at least four thousand years old, having originated as a small farming village on the banks of the Galir RiverThe city grew and changed hands many times in its history, until it became the capitol of the Vetalian Empire, Republic of Vetalia, and later the Vetalia Soviet Socialist RepublicDuring these eras, it grew rapidly until it became the largest city in the world during the time of the VSSRFollowing the collapse of the VSSR, it continued to grow and thrive as the capitol of the second Republic of Vetalia, and during the era known as the Accleration it became the capitol of the Techno-Republic of VetaliaIt was during this time that war broke out between an unknown group of nations who desired to halt the continued advancement of technology for fear of economic damamge and the nations allied with Vetalia. Vetalia City's origins are difficult to place due to the small amount of historical material during the city's early history.  Most estimates place its founding around -2344 BCE during the city-state era.  At this time, the city's name was Galmeta, named after the local tribes that had allied and founded the city as a defensive outpost against other city-state. Its advantageous position on the Goldur River enabled it to achieve a higher level of agricultural production as well as capitalize on the excellent fishing and trade routes than the river provided.  In -2021, at the dawn of the Vetalian Empire, the city had a population of 103,000 and during the next 799 years grew to over 1,000,000 residents.  Following the collapse of the Empire in -1019, the city's population contracted as the Imperial aqueducts and sewer systems decayed or were looted for stoneBy -859 the population was only 45,000 and much of the old city was completely destroyed by looting and war.

'''Monarchial Era'''

During the 8th and 7th centuries BCE, Vetalia City began to recover due to its role as the capitol of the Vetals, one of the tribes that had occupied the city during the collapse of the old empire. It was during this time that the city was renamed by it new rulers Vetalia CityUnder the rule of their kings, the city gradually expanded its sway until it had become a major Generian kingdom.  Over the next 704 years the monarchy gradually expanded its influence until it was the third largest nation on the planet and Vetalia City the largest in the world with a population of 2.3 million.  However, in the years  the monarchy grew increasingly stagnant and the country began to fall behind economically and socially, culminating in its utter defeat in the First and Second Gener WarsDuring this time, the Kingdom of Vetalia collapsed and the provinces that comprised it split off and became independent nations.  Vetalia City was the capitol of the aptly named Vetalian Republic, which was the largest and wealthiest of the successor nations and eventually succeeded in reconquering many of the other states until the country had expanded to its monarchial borders.

During the Republican Era, Vetalia City saw strong growth driven by the Republic's economic prowess.  By 13 CE, the population climbed to 8,000,000 driven by advancements in sanitation and public engineering, and it emerged as a major cultural and educational powerhouse.  Several famous universities including Malia State University and the University of Vetalia City were founded during this period, and the city became known for its technological prowess.  However, in the second and third centuries CE, it became clearer and clearer that Vetalian Republic was in need of serious reformIts economic and technological achievements had slown as the political system became bogged down in bureaucracy, and by the year 250 it was well behind other nations in all measures of economic and technological development.  Income inequality soared, and the nation eventually degenerated in to little more than an oligarchu. Over the next two decades, a revolutionary group known as the Communist Party of Vetalia gained support and eventually succeeded in overthrowing the Vetalian Republic, albeit at the cost of a decade of war and massive devastation of much of the country.

The postwar era of the city was first dominated by reconstruction efforts, and the work facing the young nation was staggering.  Some 4.6 million people, or half of the city's population, was driven out or killed by wartime devastation.  The government quickly organized reconstruction efforts, putting brigades of Red Army soldiers, citizen volunteers, and prisoners to work rebuilding the city's infrastructure. This massive rebuilding effort was one of the largest in history, with over 3 billion roubles per year poured in to reconstructing the city in the image of socialist planners. In the first decade postwar, the city's population grew at a rate of over 5% per year as millions of people returned to the city or immigrated from the rural areas.  Despite the massive construction of new prefabricated apartments, the city still suffered serious housing shortages for another decade.  However, as growth tapered off to around 2% per year in the 290's and 300's, the city was able to increase the overall quality of services and improve the supply of living conditions.

Overview

Vetalia City, the capitol of the Cybernetic Empire, is the largest and most influential city in its galaxy. With a population of over 1 billion, its economic and social influence is greater than many entire worlds under Vetalian dominion. Its rapid growth in recent years is an aftereffect of Vetalia's environmental restoration and the large amounts of wealth flowing in from the newly annexed systems won during the Strategic Expansion Campaign of the 1960's. This has remade the skyline of the city, as newly wealthy citizens and corporations invest in lavish new buildings to demonstrate their influence and economic prosperity. However, underneath the booming economy the city must also balance the need for new infrastructure in order to accomodate the influx of new inhabitants as well as the ongoing problems of inequality and crime that have dogged the city for many years.

History

Due to the devastation of much of the planet's early history during the wars and environmental devastation of the past millenium, as well as the continual construction of new buildings and infrastructure throughout the city, much of the its historical background has been lost. However, what amounts remain have suggested that the city is at least four thousand years old, having originated as a small farming village on the banks of the Galir River. However, the Vetalian coalition's technological supremacy eventually won out, and Vetalia City became the capitol of the new Technological Empire of Vetalia.

During the ensuing years, the rapid development of space travel led to a significant exodus from the planet as many citizens wanted to escape the devastated world in hope of finding economic opportunity off-planet. Vetalia City itself saw its population swell as refugees from other parts of the world fled to the comparatively unharmed region, and it began
