Introduction

The Reformed Democratic State of Naasha, as it is formally known, is situated in the southeast of the continent of Nova Europa. The area known as Greater Naasha includes mainland Naasha, islands in both the Aegean and Ionian seas and the semi-autonomous states of Surdun, Nova Crete and the Nova Aegean Islands.

History and present situation

Founded as the 'Glorious Naashan Empire' in 1547, the fledgling nation occupied similar borders to Naasha as it is known today. Taking advantage of the disorganisation amongst her neighbours, the Naashan Empire was able to expand her rule south into the lower section of the Naashan peninsula as well as east and west, seizing many of the small islands in the Ionian and Aegean seas. A series of gruelling wars ensued against the island nations of Nova Crete, Tretton and the confederation that would later become the Nova Aegean Islands. Though the Empire was unable to secure any lasting foothold on her adversaries, a great number of troops were lost in the attempt.

The loss of troops, particularly those loyal to the reigning Emperor Delfin IV in 1785 is believed to be crucial in undermining confidence in the regime and sowing the seeds of the revolt that occured in the next year. The Spring Revolt, as it has come to be known, saw peasant uprisings across southern Naasha. The Emperor ordered what troops were available to quell the resistors but local garrisons resisted, choosing to abandon their posts and assist the war weary and disgruntled lower classes. Although an attempted uprising in the nothern capital of Sandya was brutally quashed, the ensuing riots were enough to tie up what loyal troops remained in the north of the country. Taking advantage of the lack of reprisal, the former peasants established the breakaway kingdom of Surdun, occupying all of the land south of the Imperial City of Morgur.

Once order had been restored in Naasha, Delfin IV began on a series of brutal acts of vengeance on the lower classes. He appointed a fanatical priest as his advisor, known as the 'Green One' and was presumably converted to his following shortly after.
