Background

Loashia is an independent state, located in the Region of Browntopia. It is formally called the Allied States of Loashia, although it was once called the Holy Christian Empire of Loashia when a radical named Godthab seized control for a day. It is a member of the Browntopia Cooperative and the Browntopia Monetary Reform Accord. For more information, go to http://loashia.tripod.com.

History

In a time long past, a brave man trekked across a barren landscape. His name was Mats Sundin, a Swedish explorer, sent by King Olaf Dryden VI to discover a "New Found Land". He found a land. A land called Loashia, or so the natives called it. It was a land greater than distance or time. No need to note where it was or whence it came, only to know that it was Loashia.

Government

Loashia is a parliamentary democracy. The three branches of government include the Executive, the Legislative, and the Judicial.

Executive Branch

The power of the executive branch is vested in the Prime Minister and the President. The Prime Minister appoints the members of the Governors Council, except to the position of Opposition Leader. The Governors Council currently is comprised of 18 members, including the Prime Minister, the Opposition Leader, and 16 other members. The Prime Minister is elected by the people of Loashia, while the President is elected by the regions of Loashia.

Legislative Branch

The legislative branch of the federal government consists of the Peoples Council. Citizens vote in a proportional representation list fashion for the party of their choice. The party with the largest percentage of the popular vote wins the election and forms the government. The leader of the winning party is sworn in as the Prime Minister. The leader of the second-place party is sworn in as Opposition Leader. The Prime Minister and Opposition Leader hold seats in both the Peoples Council and the Governors Council, hence receiving a double vote. For legislation to become law, it must passed by the Peoples Council and the Governors Council. If there is a deadlock between the two branches, the Prime Minister casts the tie-breaking ballot. Once legislation passes both branches, it is signed into law by the President. The Peoples Council has 200 seats, of which all 200 are elected from The Allied States of Loashia. Members are elected to five-year terms.

Judicial Branch

The judicial branch consists of the Judicial Council. Justices of the federal bench are elected by the citizens, and serve for life, or until they voluntarily resign or retire. Justices can also be removed by the citizens via referendum. The Judicial Council is comprised 11 members, 10 Justices, and 1 Chief Justice. The current Chief Justice is Supreme Judge Judy.
