The Technocratic Republic of Thallos is a well-established nation on the shore of Antarctica, notable for its national devotion to scientific research and technological progress. Sharing its borders with the region of the Antarctic Steppes and the Royal Freehold of Gardelain, the Technocratic Republic has a long and peaceful history, relatively untouched by armed conflict since its founding.

Thallos is a member of the United Nations. Commander Tiberius of the Thallos Consular Guard is currently serving as General of the regional defense force, the Grand Army of Antarctica.

History

The republic was founded by a group of scientists and engineers upon the ideal of "progress above all else." Believing that civilization is driven by scientific progress, which requires a highly educated populace, free exchange of information, and well-protected civil liberties, the Founders sought to establish a bastion of reason and enlightenment. Thallos was to be a safe haven for those seeking to explore new scientific frontiers, unpestered by pitchfork-wielding mobs and shortsighted politicians.

Geography

Thallos is a well-established technocratic republic on the shores of Antarctica, with the grand city of Thanopolis serving as its administrative capital. The highest point is occupied by the Icespire Observatory, standing 1046 m above sea level.

Politics

Two elected consuls serve as heads of state. However, actual legislative and executive powers are concentrated in the Senate. Through its various committees, the Senate debates legislation and directly supervises all government agencies. Only citizens with at least university-level education in a field of science, engineering, or medicine are eligible to stand for a Senate seat or vote in Senate elections. To protect the rights of the common man, the remainder of the populace annually elect a tribune, who holds veto power over Senate legislation.

Technology and Defense

Thallos is a peaceful state. AI-controlled defenses protect its borders, and shields cover most cities and installations. Though the Republic Legions have long been disbanded, the Consular Guard - a small group of elite soldiers - still vigilantly defends Thallosian interests through covert activities.

Misc

Not content to theorize from ivory towers, both government labs and private industries are actively seeking new technologies and trading partners.

Current spending priorities include expansions to the University of Thanopolis, development of space resources, and off-world colonization.
