History
The modern history of Mecklenburg-Kupfer begins in 1815 when international consensus elevated Friedrich Franz I to the rank of grand duke. Mecklenburg-Kupfer remained relatively unchanged until the long reign of Alix I, a princess from Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, whose long reign saw the modernization of the government and economy. The country's economy and society remained stable and isolated, with little growth, through-out the 20th Century. However, the 21st Century is seeing Mecklenburg-Kupfer's traditional reliance tourism slowly eroding in the face of a growing finance sector.
Government
The Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Kupfer is governed by the Fundamental Laws of 1887. The Fundamental Laws define the roles and powers of the Grand Duke as head of state, the National Diet as legislature, and the Supreme Court. Despite the Fundamental Laws devolving many powers from the Grand Duke, he remains a strong executive.
Economy
Aside from the government and the armed forces, most of Mecklenburg-Kupfer's population is employed by the tourism industry in one way or another. Many families have in-home shops and inns while other families are employed by companies that serve visitors to Mecklenburg-Kupfer. However, the information age is slowly changing. Tourism remains the country's staple industry. Because of its location, friendly tax policy, and reputation for being a nation of hard-working people, Mecklenburg-Kupfer is seeing large growth in financial services that may one day overtake the tourism industry.
